STI V3 Tappet Covers.. Ribbed?

Guest

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I am looking at a v3 sti and it all seems pretty good, but I thought there tappet covers were smooth on the outside, this one had the ones that are half ribbved, bottom half smooth, does this mean it may not have the inner shim and good heads?

Cheers

...while we are on this topic,i have non sti v5 heads and have to buy some for my engine build soon, does anyone have pictures of what the tappet covers are i need as the wreckers have a whole lot sitting thr and the reason they are so cheap is cause they arnt labled lol silly buggers. Or will my 96 bg5 tt covers fit or will thy be missing a center bolt or 2?

The car is deffinatly without a doubt a v3 sti, applied code gc8d4ed, I have owned the same but non sti so know abit about them, but when I saw the ribbed tappet covers I was surprised! Has vf23 turbo and everything else it should from appearance, pitty I can not see internals, my guess is engine replacement maybe? But the thing is it has the sound of non-hydrolic lifters, the way it should sound, car gunna be less than 3.5grand so maybe thinking of getting it anyway, what do people think?

Same as v3-v6 wrx's/sti's I think the tt covers will be missing two bolt holes and have the extra holes for the individual coil packs aye

The VF22 powered V3 rex's are actually EJ20K's also. It's the auto's and wagons, that run the TD-04's and EJ20G's that would be the best candidate. But to my knowledge, they are smooth. A bit like the two versions of the EJ20H in the legacy's. 93-96 ribbed, 96-98 smooth.

Also post plates. Doesn't hurt to get a second opinion.

My guess is, it is an STi as you said. The V3/4's are prone to beb failure (96-98 was a bad year, in both camps). It probably died, and got fixed on the cheap with a bloody V1/2 long block.

I wouldn't touch it unless you were planning on selling the engine to the scrappies and building a new one from scratch.

Do you know if there is another way to SEE if the engine is an ej20k other than the tappet covers?

Other than yellow top injectors and all the other obvious stuff.

Cheers

No, i'm afraid. They should to my knowledge look exactly the same (V3 WRX EJ20G/EJ20K). If it has the ribbed covers, it is most cetainly not an EJ20K. (Unless someone put ribbed covers on the sti engine. Chances of that are sliiiimmmm).

One difference between V3 WRX EJ20G and EJ20K (STi's all get the K's) is the grey/vs yellow injectors, but these would have been swapped.

You can ask a dealership what the numbers on the block come up as...

No you can't. The engine numbers usually aren't recorded, and then its usually just a serial number with nothing to tie it back to what series it is.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
