Cant remove Gearbox Speedo Cable

Recommended Posts

hey guys,

I have a 91 legacy rs Manual.

I cant get the speedo cable off the gearbox because the plastic bit that you suppose to unscrew with a spanner has completly broken and have no grip to unscrew this bugger..

what can I do about this? could they take it off if I take it to a workshop?

would it be a big job like have to take the gearbox off the car to get it off etc...

I dunno what to do..I dont think I can get a wof because of this :-[

If you've done what I think you've done, then you will have to wreck the remaining plastic bolt.

huh? what do you mean??

I have got another one for replacement but cant get this broken one off...

I was trying to get it off because one day my speedo cable melted on the exhaust downpipe and the cable inside was stuck and wasnt rotating so the bit that screws into gearbox broke too.. so even I replace the long cable, speedo wasnt working, so I need to replace the short bit that screws into gearbox but the plastic red bolt(?) bit has broken so I can not use a spanner to unscrew it off..

I understand that.

Is all of it completely sheared off?

yes... at first a bit was broken but as I tried to unscrew it with the right size spanner, the plastic bolt bit shrunk? because there was a gap in the plastic, and then it started to break more and as I was trying everything to get it out all of its broken now... haha................ :'(

I dont understand why they had to make it plastic....

This will be quite hard to remove while still in the car if all of the 17mm plastic nut is broken,

It will be hard to see but is there a little bit of thread left from the nut maybe 1 or 2 rings you might be able to grab with some longnose/needlenose pliers & try to undo whats left in there,

Its plastic thread & about the size of a diff bung 21mm or so & probably the rubber seal under it is stuck you may have to use some penetrating spray like crc, wd40 & the likes to get in there & free it up, even try turning the whole short piece to see if that helps.

worst comes to worst it could have been previously cross threaded & damaged the thread & wound in Or loctited in >:(, you may have to remove gearbox & get better access to it.

I replaced a short speedo cable a couple of weeks ago on a wrx that had run dry & siezed. :)

would anyone have a clue how much they would charge at a workshop to remove the gearbox and put back on?

as I live at a apartment, wish to do my self but cant do...

id say if theyre any good, 1.5 to 2 hours max to get it out and the same to get back in. so at 60-70 an hour it might be up to 400 all up refitted

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
