Rebuild cost

Hey guys, I'm edging closer and closer to the point when I can finally get my new car and I had a question about rebuild costs.

What I'm wondering is this.

Say I buy a V7/8/9 sti and the motor shits out, drops a piston, something.

I say to myself "haha but I have a warrenty"

So I take it along to Mr mechanic who takes the engine out and sends it to a rebuilder who funnily enough..... rebuilds it and sends it back and then Mr mechanic pops it back in my car.

Yay

But now the question is. Most insurance policys have a 5,000 claim limit. I know a FEW dont but say mine does

What would we expect the cost of this process to be?

I would guess maybe 5-8 hours dropping the engine and then the same to pop it back in.

So thats what $1,000 gone

What would the rebuild cost?

I know there are different types and the basic one would just be rings and gaskets etc etc

But say there are pistons involved

What sort of costs would I be looking at if I say cracked a piston and had to replace them as well

Also am I correct in saying that if you punch a hole through a block in a late model subbie then kiss goodbye to like 7k at least for the full rebuild?

Any experience in these matters would be great as I'm just trying to plan out the purchase with as much info as I can.

Cheers guys

The most likely thing to happen would be a BEB in which case you wouldnt need a full rebuild. Can generally get that fixed for around the 2k mark.

In the unlikely event of the engine completely shitting itself they would mostly buy the entire shortblock for whatever they are going for at the time. Last time I checked a V7 STI shortblock was 2.8k but its probably gone up. And then you'd pay labour and other parts on top of that ie, headgaskets, cambelt, etc. When I investigated that option I was told I'd be able to keep that under 5K. Just.

I'm unsure how mechanical warranty works on claims like that though. Especialy if you were to drop a piston as there would be a strong chance it was due to a modification going wrong. They dont usualy shit themselves in that way. And the BEB's can be caused by inproper servicing.

Generally speaking it would be about $500 to have the engine apart and on a bench for appraisal.

I would think that the insurance company would have there own mechanics or a choice of who are able to carry out claim work.

As stated, a lot of times major components can be reused, Pistons, rods, crankshaft.

Where are you based?

tell the warrenty to shove it and pick up a diy manual. late model v7 and above dont seem to shit themselves as much as older stuff. id take a punt. put 30 bux a week aside for repairs and servicing

Heres a few retail prices to think about

Genuine Bearings $800

Modine oil cooler $400

Fored Pistons $1000 (after market)

Rods $600 (after market)

Cam Belt crap $600

Engine builder $1200+

If the crank is screwed $2000+

Na wouldn't bother paying $2000 for a crank unless going billet... cheaper to get a secondhand one or get the old one regrounded with matching under size bearings... wouldn't cost any more than $600

Don't forget that insurance co's don't pay for consumables, eg. cambelt, waterpump, oil, coolant, so none of that comes under the $5k limit. You gotta pay for it separately if you want it done.

You could have bought one of these & used the engine then parted the rest out or even sold the rolling minus the engine

Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.
