Thinkng of getting a new block for my version 4 wrx sti... Very amature question but wat is the difference between long block and short block and what is closed deck?

long block has heads assembled, and bolted on, short block does not, closed deck is an early rs/gt and v1/2wrx ra thing, its a stronger block as in the cylinder walls/coolant passages are supported at the deck of the block as opposed to being open with no support

then you have the difference between anything up to v4 (incl). and v5 onwards up to v8 in a 2.0l

the former is center thrust, the later are all rear thrust.

Your intake manifold is not compatible with the V5 onwards heads. So if someone offers you one, don't do it.

You'll have no end of headaches getting it to work (if you ever do).

but exhaust side is all the same correct?

and any 2.o shortie bolts up to any 2.0 heads (incl AVCS) correct? (with the correct head gasket and pistons)

Yup and yup. I'm talking about complete engines or long blocks though.

Ok so if i wanted to put all my old stuff back on and ONLY replace the block i would be wanting a short block? and as its a 1997 wrx sti V4... ok to hell with it can someone tell me exactly what i need. Short or long block and closed or open... Im too hungover to comprehend what you guys are saying lol

You won't get a fully forged short block, unless it's all been pulled apart and rebuilt with forged bits. So you'll need to spend big $$ to build it.

or, buy the parts as you go. then its not such a big hit on the wallet

Thats not a bad idea... What parts should i buy? What are strong but not the most expensive... Im after a reliable engine that is strong enough to take on the track once in a while

One of those brand-new-still-in-box V7 STi shortblocks is as good an option as any on a budget right? A brand new factory assembled shortblock with factory forged pistons should handle the odd track day no problem.

If you can assemble the engine or some CSers can help you, that is a friggin cheap reliable rebuild. Sometimes I wish I had done that.

my block is the standard sti v4. Its a bare block. $200. check the FS section. I think I have it listed there.
