Harmonic balancer

Hey,

Started the car this morning only to hear a clicking noise, on closer inspection the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) is munted the rubber is totally gone.

I have one off a v3/4 STI thankfully. Some ppl say they are balanced for YOUR engine, i read they have nothing to do with balancing of the crank shaft itself, they damper out torsional vibration using their mass and the rubber for energy displacement.

Some questions:

- Some ppl say they are balanced for YOUR engine, is true??

- are STI ones better contructed than standard? i.e. are ej20 H/Balancers all the same?

- when they crap out like that can they do any damage to your engine?

if its clicking and wobbling... PLEASE check the keyway.. Mine was fucked like you describe

as was with mine it has come loose a little and the keyway was munted (that keeps it straight and true) and this meant new crank

YIKES! mind you i can clearly see the rubber is gone..

undo that main bolt - 22mm from mem and then pry the balancer off, then take a look at the keyway.. should be clear as day

yea fuk it, might duck home and do it.. so i know what i am in for..

K, shot home and whipped it off, keyway looks fine, rubber bit was absolutley munted.

fitted S/H V3/4 STI Harmonic Balancer, used medium strenght lock tight too

20min job.. Done! ;D

Slightly off topic - I've just had a look at mine, its not a factory type with the rubber it looks like its machined for a solid billet of aluminium, would this do damage to the engine eventually? I'm sure the factory harmonic balancer should be on there for a reason, right?

probably a GFB aftermarket one
