gearbox side seals

Hey,

gota do G/box side seals in my BG, i had a good search and didnt really know what key words to use lol

Is there a 'how to' on replacing these?

(if my search was shyte & there is info on here i will remove this post)

Hey Gary i just did some in my box's i got the seals from armstrongs subaru chch for around $14. a seal & i used a 32mm socket & small soft hammer to remove & fit, they are directional L & R sided. my box's were already apart when i did them tho

cool thanx, least they are cheap to do

wud just like some pics or intructions to get to the seals on the box itself

I am sweet with getting the CVs off the axles at the g/box end etc

I also believ there is an o ring aswell as a seal?

will mine be like this?

(to get the inner CVs off, i just unbolt the two lower strut bolts and tip the whole hub back, with the pin out of the inner CV they just slide off)

never mind, i followed that link then had a look on the old STI box i have, it looks dead easy!

I see there is a seal and an O ring. Are they all the same on subie boxes?

ahhh, just pull the seal out without pulling the cap off, and you can do it just by dropping lower ball joint, swinging hub out of way and pulling the seal out....

the oring is to seal the thread, but hardly ever see them leaking.....

aah yeah removing that whole unit will affect the crown / pinion backlash adjustment eh? i.e. DONT change it?

exactly. unless you mark them before removal, but the oring never leaks. so dont touch them lol.

and undoing the strut at teh bottom and taking it off the lower arm is easier

depends on the tools you have. if you remove the strut from the hub, scratch/trace a line where they meet so you can keep your alignment more-or-less.

the seals look to have a lip i.e. cant be pulled out.. well i spose they could but youd never get the new ones in.

do i remove the whole cap...carefully marking them etc and counting the turns??

well i took it off anywho, took heaps of pics, used a dot punch to mark it and a sharp blade on one of the fins to mark how far it (the retainer) stuck out, then counted 5 & quarter turns

both sides were leaking, reckon the g/box shop musta put the seals in the wrong sides (its got $1800 worth of reciepts)

well, the seals and O rings cost $40 all up for both sides.

Fitted em with care tonight. The old O rings were hard and brittle, some peeps say dont worry bout doing the O rings, i am glad i ordered them
