Hello everyone. I have got a 2 litre non turbo impreza (2001 model). I am wanting to ge the subaru sound. Will removing the cat give the subaru rumble. I dont want it to be loud.

What are you experiences? What about leaving the cat in but putting a coby in?

dont put a coby on it. theyre shitty, old resonators that do nothing.

get a proper dual chamber "v8 style" muffler and it will sound average. they cackle pretty bad if you take the cat converter out.

If you do remove the cat replace it with a resonator or you will get that horrible crackle mensioned,

you could get a well packed rear muffler, not the tinny thin canon straight through type but a chambered type rear muffler to get a decent note from,

i have found that NA subaru's can be really loud with the simple bigbore free flow approach

get coby out of your head mate, theyre junk. haha

but yes theyre an over priced resonator, you get better resonators at repco for 40 bucks.

I HEARD MY NAME.

...

Yeah, get rid of the thoughts of a Coby. They're poos. What you want is at worst an RPS, at best a proper Japanese name brand muffler. HKS, Fujitsubo, 5Zigen, you name it.

The N/As have nasty headers; the turbo ones go around the front of the sump and have one part significantly longer than the other, THAT son is what makes the burble :) The N/As either have completely tuned headers, a skodey Y-pipe...or god-knows-what.

Being a 2001 model I'll assume it's DOHC. If so, those tend to sound flat as a pancake if not slightly raspy. The example Tintin gave, my car, has a big ugly rasp on it because it's got SOHC heads into a slightly uneven Y-pipe. Sounds kinda weird.

TOO LONG DIDN'T READ:

- If you want the Subaru rumble, you need to put turbo headers on. They need modification to adequately fit an N/A from what I've seen. You also want a proper exhaust, NOT a Coby: get a 2.25" or 2.5" midpipe made up. To have a QUIET burble, get an STi muffler (version 7/8/9/10 will fit your car well) fitted to the midpipe at the same time. You'll need a new catpipe from the headers, as the turbo ones aren't a straight bolt-on...you are missing the turbo.

Edit: Just as a disclaimer. Personally that's far too much work... save up for a WRX is the best answer.

I have a set of V7 STi unequal length headers and uppipe if you're interested. I've twisted some of the heatshields a bit, but I'm sure you can just retwist them and make them fit. Don't ever plan on reusing them, so they might as well get used by someone.

Well i have an N/A and its DOHC and does actually have a slight rumble.

I just bought a zerosports C-pipe (muffler) and sounds really nice.

+1

I have a TS-R (DOHC N/A) and it also has a bit of a rumble. Mine has a 2.25" cat back exhaust with a chambered resonator and Fujitsubo muffler.

It will never sound like a turbo subaru without proper unequal length headers though.

Removing the cat will only make it sound louder and raspier (unless you swap it out for a resonator like Cuddas said, still won't give it the rumble tho)

Putting a coby in won't do much by itself. I reckon your best bet would be to hunt around for a nice muffler. Chambered ones sound nice on N/A's, and you also might be better off going for a mild steel one rather than stainless (will help prevent it from sounding raspy).

If you're prepared to spend a bit more ($200-$250) then you could do what I did and get a cat back exhaust made up with a decent resonator. I'll try and take a video of mine and upload it over the wkend if I have some free time

that's the best piece of advice i've ever heard given to some one wanting to make their n/a subaru cooler/faster/better. how blatantly ironic

i remember pages and pages of you arguing with an entire forum full of people trying to justify your copious expenses making your n/a awesome while they told you to simply buy a wrx. the best point i remember you trying to make was how that n/a was actually better than turbo due to having a flat response and no "lag".

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
