1999 Legacy TX BH5 Fuel Filter access

Hey guys,

From what I can tell, I'll have an in-tank filter attached to the pump - accessed from under the rear passenger seats?

Can you get replacement filters or will I have to do the pump too? How much am I looking at if I do the pump + filter do you think?

That's just a filter sock, no need to replace that and Subaru don't sell them on their own...

the actual filter is in the engine bay attached to the passenger side strut tower, by the washer bottle.

Not sure that is the case? I m pretty sure with mine (BE5) its not there anyway

Its under the seat - you can just replace the filter quite easily from there as per the link

Weird, both my 96 legacy and 99 Impreza have the filter in the engine bay.

yer it changes in the GD impreza's and also BE/BH legacy onwards. Struck this doing my filter change on the BP legacy over the weekend.

hmm FWIW that link isnt quite applicable to BP/BL as the fuel pump is in a different enclosure that i couldnt get open.

Thanks guys, so I'm right in that there is no actual in-line filter as well? There's not on behind the wiper fluid, so unless they hide it somewhere else?

Is this the only fuel filter I need to change?

Found a Walbro kit online for around $190 - kit includes filter bag and pump etc - can I get that cheaper or not really?

walbro will be totally overkill for a TX

beware of walbros - as some are not genuine. Check for sponsors here, pay the money and get the real deal.

There is a filter in the tank there attached to that plastic thing, it should still be in-line.

Yeah I figured a fuel pump rated at up to 500HP was a little overkill haha.

1. Can I replace the filter bag itself

2. If not, Can I get a cheaper pump/filter kit than the Walbro?

why are we talking about replacing the pump? have i missed something?

just take the cover off as per link and replace the filter?

walbro wont just be a straight swap either as they dont fit

Keep it simple, save replacing the pump when it claps out - as mentioned its not a straight fit

Wasn't sure if I could buy a filter on it's own. Will Repco stock them, or should I try someone else?

I don't have one in the engine bay, but from what I've read - they didn't start solely using in tank filters until like 2004-2005 in legacys?

The service manual shows only the one in the tank - mines a BE5 and there are no other filters

Been trying to find a service manual - found one for 99 legacy but only has the 2.2 & 2.5 engines - should be similar in most respects I guess, but fuel filter is still located in engine bay on those models.
