Strange Whirring noise??

Guest

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, When i hit about 90 to 100km/h i get this whirring sound.

To describe it by word it would sound like this.... Whoooo...whooooooo...whoooo...whooooooo...whoooo (sounds like very faint tyre rub, not like a train WOO WOO!)

On m'way i have chucked the car in to neutral and it doesn't change, so it's not affective by the gearbox speed, i think?

I have had the right front lower control arm replaced and a wheel alignment done a week ago as previous owner had bent the original, tyres are in good condition.

Any idea what it could be? Wheel bearing, front diff, cv joint, bad tyre noise, gearbox?

Thanks in advance, Dan

could also be diff too.. as a diff wurring will normally still be there when in neutral and in gear...normally if the wurring noise changes note when going from decel to accel then its the diff...if the wurring stays the same even when switching between decel and acel (acel and decel use a different side of the crownwheel teeth) then its more than likely a wheel bearing

hope this helps

Hi and thanks for the replies.

I'd say it sounds like from the right front side and i replaced the control arm as it was bent / pushed back.

I have only taken the car to about 110kmp/h so far and the time/pause between whirrings gets faster as the speed increases. No difference whether im on accel or decel or in gear or in neutral.

Does it still sound like a wheel bearing? as i'd hate it to be the front diff :o

Most likely bearing but try to wind up windows and take it to the problem speed and on a smooth quiet rd and try to pin point what side/front/rear it is from that way. Somthimes very hard to diagnose a awd wheel bearing noise by jaking it up and spinning it ,unless its under load at speed. Plus it may be worn and noisey but not have much or any play when jacked up.

You should be able to jack it up . . Feel it for top / bottom play and left / right play . . . Also spin the wheel and hold the spring . . . If you feel nasty vibrations while holding the spring you hit the jack pot ! Thats how you check wheel bearings for warrents :)

Not as easy as that on an AWD car as spinning it fast enough cant done :) the "wiggle" test also very hard on a bearing that has the drive shaft thru the middle of it :)

one way I test for bearing noise, is take car for a drive, get it warm(makes grease in bearing thinner) find an empty section of road, now go from left to right at about 70 slowly (ie make the turns slow but at 70 to load up the bearings) and listen to see if the noise changes :)

Must be a feel I have then man I can all ways feel a worn wheel bearing . . . Probably because I use to be wof inspector . . . Plus open front dif mean the front will spin fast if both wheels are off the ground :)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
