2004 Legacy GT Spec B - Hesitating/surging under WOT

Hey Guys,

Recently (I think it started just after I had my full 100km service done, can't be sure) my car has started hesitating/surging quite nastily when accelerating rapidly. Any clues as to what it is likely to be? It's worse when the car is cold.

I'm always running it on 95+ octane gas (usually Caltex)

O2 sensor would be my guess , ours started playing up not long after 100k service.

?+1 on the O2, as O2 is ingored under rapid accel

But too often O2's are overlooked and never replaced until they fail -

Time for a diag scan and assessment of AFM and o2 to start with

I had the air/fuel ratio sensor replaced just under a year ago. That's not the same thing is it?

yes thats the wideband O2 sensor

It could be coil or plugs. Mine would hesitate only when I put my foot down, it didn't when I drove like a Nana and it was my plugs that had crapped out.

Neo: That sounds exactly like what mine is doing. Armstrong say they checked and replaced the plugs at the 100km service though.

Armstrongs have about 4 years experience between the entire staff - they are MUPPETTS

they could have fitted a coil wrong, cracked a plug upon install, left an intake pipe loose

either take it back to them, or get someone who knows what they are doing to check it out

Agree with that , Armstrongs in chch did our 100k service ($2.5k) and it ran worse than ever after , they also left the radiator fans unplugged causing it to overheat and crack.

My 07 GT did something similar. Really noticeable hesitation in power delivery when engine was under load - just when boost started building. Had mechanic check everything but nothing seemed wrong so suggested running 98 RON. That cured it. Interesting. Just something else to throw in the mix. Let us know what your cure is...

98 is a minimum for these- they were spec'd at 100+ from factory

Av gas it is then -- factory says so

Well I took it back to Armstrong. A day and a half later I got a phone call letting me know there was a problem with one of the spark plugs that they replaced at the 100k service. Picked up the car yesterday, drives nicely. No charge.

Overall I'm happy...

Have never seen a problem with the factory NGK plugs ever

Yeah they realised when you took it back that they hadnt connected 1 of the plugs ...lol

I'll back that, id say one of there service muppets (we have them at mitsubishi too) cracked the ceramic on the plug during retarded install
