You can get 2.5" siamesed/divorced downpipes.

Had a divorced one on my old sti, and had 2x siamesed ones on my old TT legacy, both 2.5"

I've got a V7 STi with a Rage 3" downpipe, custom mild steel 3" exhaust with 3 resonators, welded to a Zerosports World Leaguer muffler. Very quiet, great note, flows excellent. It's what I'd consider a perfect sound level, can just barely hear the burble around town in a car that has no sound deadening, but open the taps and it's all on

I have exactly the same setup apart from a 4" tip but mine is reasonably loud, on a v2 jdm.

You sound quite confident about that statement. I've seen 2.5" and 3" downpipes with and without the blanking plate. Depends on who's made it.

Thinking of doing this, and welding a pipe inside to make it straight through but retain shape (so i can still claim: Factory officer...).

99% of police wouldnt have a clue...got pulled up in a turbo dx corolla, no cert etc cop popped bonnet to run vin...( had wrong rego tag displayed) didnt even notice the fact it was not a standard engine/turbo etc
