sputtering external wastegate

as above the wastegate sounds like its sputtering as it comes up to boost.

running 14psi with hdi electronic boost controller on a v5 non sti. i havent welded up the internal gate yet could this be flapping open? its not a sticky gate or anything it sound like its opening and shutting repetitively even when it reaches 14psi. it holds boost fine to the rev cut it just sounds like a strangled cat coming on to and holding boost.

starts at about 7psi when the gate starts to open through till 14psi.

Are you running an internal or external gate? The controller should have 2 settings, one for internal or external gate...

external gate. i have set it up for external. its single channel so just turn the knob and it works. it is working/boosting fine just splutters away.

you must weld closed the internal if running external can cause lots of issues you may find doing this itll be even more responsive

try drop your boost down to under 10psi

doesnt make any difference like i said as it starts at about 7psi when it starts to open. its not boost/rev/fuel cut. i have run it at spring pressure 10psi.

ill weld actuator arm tonight and see if theres any difference.

i had the same problem when i was on 14psi then i changed spring but i also changed my ecu,after that my gate was back to its normal self lol sorry i couldnt help bro

Vorigan, can you get around welding the gate closed? Like, making up a locking arm or some such to keep the actuator shut?

I made a plate that wedged between arm and turbo to stop it opening and worked perfect cause didnt want anything permanent but im sure better things can be made I just used what I had.

people do wire them shut but ive always welded the flapper shut.

just tak weld the top of the hinge of the acutator arm. thats how my vf30 was done. worked mint

I have the exact same vehicle as you with a external set-up on it. Im running spring pressure (14psi) with my internal gate NOT tacked or welded shut, I seem to have no problems....

my step brothers v4 sti did this when he removed his electronic boost controller and sold it to his mate. sounded like a normal external screamer setup prior to its removal then started pulsing? kinda hard to desribe. like duh duhduh dudhudhuhdhuhduuuuduuhuduuudhuh instead of just the waaaaaaaaaaarp. haha. could be a similar problem? i dont talk to him much so dont know if hes solved it.

sounds like the same problem. ive welded the internal up now just got to go for a blat and try it havent had a chance yet.

i changed wastegate over to a turbosmart one running a 6psi spring and welded up the internal. still have the same problem and just as responsive as before...

im picking if boost controller or solenoid was faulty boost would fluctuate but it holds rock solid. dont have either spare to see if thats the problem.

any other ideas steve?

nope fixed leaks when i changed gate over. have checked since too.

yes you can if using a spring it needs to be off the header pipe on a two stroke bike or making a fixed arm, an internal gate even with a base of 11psi like on a sub will start to open around 2psi as exhaust pressure is forcing it open thus why electronic boost controllers improve it holding it closed longer even for the same boost again why and external works better
