SF5 1997 manual s/tb forester Surge/hesitation

i have a subaru forester SF5 1997, ej20 s/tb manual. so it has started surging recently, i dont wana spend money by taking it to mechanics. the symptom is it surges on load just above 2800 rpm at any vehicle speed, what could be reasons?

i am guessing its turbo, can hear some rattling noise coming from that area but not sure, also the idle stays below 500 or sometimes stay above 1500 wont come down

on a seperate note the abs light is on aswel, i changed the brake light bulb (since it was blown) and the light is still present, could be sensors ? i resetted the ecu

Try cleaning your maf sensor, surging and a rough idle can be caused by a faulty maf

Hope cleaning it does the job. But I am uncertain about that noise from the turbo area.

o2 sensor, Knock sensor

Could be AFM but usually (9 times out of 10) cleaning wont do anything...

Do you run a pod filter? does it surge at idle? (up to 1000 then back down to nearly stall then back up) if so then it probably is you AFM

Also check your O2 sensor, can cause strange symptoms sometimes, Check out this:

What fuel? I had surging in my WRX on gull 98 - went back to 95 and its all sweet.

try to clean throttle and AFM
