Cambelt gone? Worth repairing?

Love my Subie GTB. So much its the second I have owned. Till the day the music died...

Cruising down the motorway the engine died suddenly. Now just turns over fast as if there is no compression. Seems like typical of a cambelt failure? Bugga as car regularly serviced too.

I am guessing the engine is not worth repairing assuming the cambelt has gone as likley too much damage being an interferrence engine?

Can anyone suggest good source for another engine?

Or maybe have an engine for sale?

I am in AKL and have posted add in WTB section too.

Thanks!

Try a used belt, Pull it apart and put a used belt on, kick it in the guts and see if it runs as it should, if it does go shopping for new bits, if not find a replacement motor, It\'s not a huge amount of extra work and you will have to pull the radiator and other bits anyway either way.

If you were closer i\'d come and do it for you as i have a few used belts here, i\'m sure someone close to you has a belt you can use.

Also a useful note, If the motor is ok buy the belt and bits from either Partmaster or BNT, Here in CHCH they both supply genuine subaru hydraulic tensioners (as the aftermarket ones had issues) at less than trade from Subaru, The waterpumps are the same as genuine and the idlers are also just the same, main difference is a saving of about $200

Seems odd that it didn\'t go at all, should have still started just sound like crap. Possibly something else causing it not to start also?

correct - it would have to have bent valves on ALL cylinders to not even run

And that you would have noticed, would have gone bang and locked up.

I\'d be double checking timing and checking for error codes.

Excuse my ignorance and please correct me for being wrong (I am dead keen to learn everything I can about these engines) but when the timing belt snaps or something similar like this case, does it not cause the pistons to hit the valves and bend them etc? Thus interference engine?

I also found this, just incase anyone else is interested http://www.scoobyenthusiast.com/subaru-faq/which-subaru-engines-are-interference-what-subaru-engines-are-non-interference

Looks like I was on the right track but not quite right.

99% of the time both DOHC NA and turbo version are perfectly fine

Yes they are interference but due to the design with 4 cams - the cams roll onto the back of the lobes when the belt breaks which leaves the valves shut

Evo\'s etc with only two cams - end up with 4 or more valves left open when the cams stop

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
