HELP!!! IDENTIFYING MY HEADS

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

just wondering if anyone knows how to identify heads, i have a 1996 gf8 wrx.

my heads have under bucket shims, and two lines through cam shaft stampings, 1 line thru the middle and 1 line towards the end. the valve faces have EH and IH on them.

basically wanting to know what version they may be, (sti, standard, etc)

long story short, brought the vehicle, old owner had motor recond (bottom end) and had heads put on that he knows nothing about..

any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

i havn\'t seen these before, but its likely they are v4 sti due to:

shim under bucket = sti

V3 sti having different markings on the cams

96/97/98 twin turbo will have blocked off water/oil lines on the LHS head

anything newer than V4 has a different intake manifold bolt pattern

and that ben-jamminn has identical heads on his V4 sti :)

Was just trying to work out if i had a "mongrel" head on my hands, if you knw what i mean,

Lyk a head with possibly different or wrong valves in it , or camshafts in wrong head set up, sucks ther is no part or id numbers on them to easily distinguish them apart,

i might just have to bite the bullet and keep these ones aside if i cannot work them out, Ive had a few subarus now but likewise ive never seen these heads before, ive even done a bg5 conversion with v2 sti heads and there nothin like this either :(,,,,,,,maybe easier to buy a set of sti heads that are genuine to their name off someone reputable.

As kamineko said, they are likely version 4 STi, do they work OK? if it ain\'t broke why fix it ;)

lol,

Think the last owner had engine rebuilt by monkeys, They forgot to put a shim under 1 exhaust valve, and didnt put valve keepers on properly on another, i have retrieved 1 shim from the sump but cannot find the other, so my guess is, its been overlooked at rebuild assembly stage >:(

does any one have some or know where i can order some,, subaru in taranaki seem to have no clue on finding the correct part for me :(

cheers boosted.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all, just updating progress on head job lols, all shims moved measured moved and re measured, all valve clearances within 0.02mm, altho i do have 1 exhaust valve at 0.33 wich i think is still to big :(

also,

if any one can help maybe, has anybody got a couple of shims i could buy, i need 1 @ 2.35mm and ill remeasure the other tommorro, and update again

My local subaru dealer cannot and will not supply shims for my heads without a vehicle vin code to match them >:(... grrr fustrating. Be ok if i actually had a genuine v4 sti lols,

till tomorro,

That 0.33 gap could cause an annoying Tick, at 0.08 oversized. While your doing it, with the rest within 0.02. Do it once, do it well ;)

Interested myself now, with heads off and Cam/Valve changes happening. ;D Will let you know if I find any Part Numbers. I\'m shim over bucket, but will be a start?

Your Subaru Dealer orders Shims by Vin Number, most parts are found with Vin (My OEM suspension Bushes were). He doesn\'t know the Vin for your Heads. Just get any V4 STI Vin to order Shims and tell him to just trust you ;)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
