Recommended Posts

 Dacca said:

Just out of interest, i asked the local Subaru dealer how much it would cost to set tappets on V3sti,reply-cant be done.

Might as well sell my car then i told them..."well we can do something but cant tell you how much!"

Version 3 might be HLA (hydraulic Lifter Assembly).

Cut and paste from Wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine

EJ20G[edit]

EJ20G engines fall into 3 categories:

1. Rocker-style HLA EJ20G usage:[edit]

Legacy RS 89-93

Legacy RS-RA 89-93

Legacy GT 89-93

Power output ranges from 200 PS (147 kW; 197 bhp) @ 6000 rpm and 260 Nm for the GT to 220 PS (162 kW; 217 bhp) @ 6400 rpm and 270 Nm for the RS versions. Engines can be identified by coil on plug with 2 M6 bolts per coil and valve covers with 4CAM 16VALVE and horizontal lines above and below the plug holes. All these engines have the air-to-water intercooler setup (chargecooler) and oil squirters.

2. Bucket-style HLA EJ20G usage:[edit]

Impreza WRX 92~96.

Impreza WRX Wagon 92~96

Impreza WRX STI 93~96

EUDM Subaru Impreza Turbo 94~96

Power output ranges from 220 PS @ 6000 rpm and 260 Nm for the WRX Wagons to 275 PS @ 6500 rpm and 319 Nm for the WRX STI Version II. Engines can be identified by coil on plug with 1 M8 bolt per coil and valve covers with 4CAM 16VALVE and horizontal lines above the plug holes. Generally these engines all have the slanted intercooler. Some engines may not have HLA buckets but solid buckets with shims underneath. These engines also feature lighter valves, the intake valves are marked INKO and the exhaust valves are marked EXKO. The standard HLA valves are I252 and E283 respectively. All WRX Wagon engines and automatic sedan engines came with a TD04 with 90 deg elbow, all manual WRX sedans including STI versions had a TD05 with 9

3. Shim-over-bucket style EJ20G usage:[edit]

Impreza WRX AT 97~98

Impreza WRX AT Wagon 97~98

JDM Forester Turbo 97~98

EUDM Subaru Impreza Turbo 97~98

Power output is 250 PS @ 6000 rpm for the Japanese versions and 211 PS for the European model. Engines can be identified by smooth valve covers, plug leads and a wasted spark coil in the middle of the intake manifold. These engines were available with both manual and automatic transmission in Japan, but generally had manual transmission in Europe in the Impreza Turbo.

looks good but incomplete info, its missing the shim under. also we\'re talking about EJ20K

Quote taken from centre paragraph:

Next down on Wiki\'s list:

EJ20K[edit]

To identify an EJ20K:

Wasted spark coil pack on center of manifold

Inlet under manifold

Divorced idle air controller

Usage:

Impreza WRX & STi 9/96~9/98

Which would mean Dacca\'s Mechanic is wrong because the Sti uses Shim Under Buckets not HLA?

That^

Getting them machined separately would cost a small fortune compared to OEM. As said your "Mechanic" is being difficult. I\'ve had no luck finding Part Numbers at all? My replacement Heads arrived today so I can start measuring/ordering myself.

I have done a bit of a search on checking and adjusting valve clearances on v4 shim under motors..

From what i have read the valves clearance should be checked at 105 thousand miles..

They can be checked with motor in car however it appears it is ten times easier to remove motor ..

It seems the motor should be removed if shims need changing..

Estimates of time to remove motor, adjust shims and replace motor is around 10 hours..

All this means that 99% of shim under motors never have their clearances checked..

That is until they burn the exhaust valves due to tight clearances ...

All info gained over interweb so could be dodgy..

However i shall check with my friendly mechanic when i next see him and report back...

Is the Exhaust Shim 0.02 over spec, or 0.02 over the +/- 0.02 tolerance?

With the effort you\'ve put in already, motor still out and for the sake of $9. You may as well get it machined to perfection. Would be a good kick in the nuts to find an annoying tick from that Valve when it\'s warmed up and broken in?

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
