Speedo not working!

Hi all

Im just wondering whether anyone can help me with a problem i have with my speedo. My car is a 99 hx-20s, manual and the speedo has decided to stop working. It just flickers aimlessly about and all of a sudden it\'ll flick back to the right speed.

My question is \'would replacing this with a same year wrx sti speedo cluster fix the problem or is it something more in depth?\'

Im aware that the rev meter and speedo are in opposite places and was told that the kms would change to the new speedos odometer i put in. Ive also been told that not having a turbo could interfer with the speed reading.

Please help! any input is useful.

Does everything else still work properly in the cluster? If so, could it be a failing speed sensor in the gearbox? I guess you\'d potentially have the Check Engine Light glaring at you if that was the case.

You would more than likely have cel if speed sensor was playing up

Can you not find an identical dash?

the speed sensor runs through the dash circuitry, then to the ECU. with no CEL coming up, it points to a fault with the gauge itself. in this case its probably a dry/cracked solder joint inside the cluster.

an electronics minded person can easily repair this if the cluster is removed

Haha sorry my improper english i meant to say that he thought this could effect the speed and rev meter if i were to put an sti cluster in my hx-20s.

Yeah no cel comes on. Its difficult to source an exact replacement speedo and the wreckers have no idea how many kms the cars done. Id prefer to find something with a reasonably close amount of ks. I mite just chance it a buy the cluster ive been looking at on trademe once my next payday comes around. If it doesnt work out i can always sell on.

where are you based? if you\'re keen to remove it, take a photo of the back of it and i\'ll draw what solder joints to reheat. pretty simple.

ok, care of wiki here is an exaggerated example of what you are looking for (tiny fractures in the solder)

here is generally where you should look, as fractures are normally only caused by thermal expansion or physical stress

have a good look over the other joints too.

to repair, use a soldering iron and heat some new solder into the joint. not heaps, but make sure its nice a shiny looking when you\'re finished. the flux inside the new solder will clean the joint.

make sure your soldering iron is clean all the time. once hot, melt solder onto the tip then wipe it onto a wet sponge. it should be clean and shiny.

if you have more tools, (solder sucker or braid) remove the old solder first

Thanks alot! problem solved. It took me awhile to get the time to do this but its working how it should now. The cracks in the solder were very small so id didnt take much.
