V5/6 Gauge Cluster into V1/2

I like the look of the Version 5/6 Gauge cluster much much better than the standard ones in my 94 WRX, so ive been keeping an eye out for a set of V5/6 ones for a while have found some.

Has anyone done this swap before or have any tips?

I think the most difficult bit is going to be fitting a electronic speed sensor instead of the speedo cable, as from info I have found indicates that the V5/6 ones run an electronic speed sensor and as far as Im aware my curreny gauge cluster takes the mechanical drive and then sends the electronic signal back to the ECU.

Please correct my if Im wrong with any of this. I may do a writeup on this aswell, as the V1/2 gauge cluster is complete excrement, espically considering the needles on the gauges dont light up.

To get/do list:

-Electronic Speed sensor

-Pinouts of current and V5/6 Clusters

I do beleive that my current one has 2 mounts at the top and 2 at the bottom, where as the V5/6 one have 1 at the top and 2 at the bottom...

Might have to get out the hacksaw :P

I have numbered them as follows

A = Left hand Plug (16 Pin)

B = Right hand Plug (16 Pin)

Pins are numbered 1 - 16 from left to right (clockwise)

There is also a little module in the cluster with a BLUE 5 pin plug on it, Ive pulled it out and it is pretty much a small speaker with a crossover, im not sure what this does but will put it in when I put the new gauges in

cool.... im just tracing every track on the circuit board to find whats what, ive got the correct plugs for it arriving from a wrecker on monday so then its going to be a bit of cutting and soldering etc. Im also getting a electronic speed sensor from boostin sometime soon as well...

I think the hardest part is going to be making it fit and look right in the hole it goes in as there is quite a bit of difference in the shape and size between the 2... much more difference than it appears but it will be doable making it fit.

Today ive become quite proficient at disassembleing the different modules that make up a cluster. The only one that has me beat at the moment is how to get the bulb to light up in the clock, double sided circuit boards annoy me espically when numerous tracks dissapear under a large surface mounted component

TBH the main reason im doing it is because I want the clock and the damm gauge needles in the V1/2 clusters dont light up so when your driving at night everything is guess work Fuel level, Speed, revs and temp are all unknowns.... altho the new cluster supposedly has 113,000km on it where as my old one has 211,000km on it.....

But i will try and find out if its possible to have it wound forward to match my current KMs

Another Update

I went through the lists today to figure out what differences/attitional/missing things there are

Missing (exist on old cluster but not on new):

-Demister Light -ve

-LO Light

-FWD Light

Additional (exist on new cluster but not on old):

-I/C Spray Light -ve

-Clock ACC +ve

-Clock Illumination (dunno if + or -)

-Temp Gauge has own ground

-Speedo needs Constant +ve (this also supplys the clock and door open light)

-Speedo needs +ve feed from sensor

-Speedo needs ground or -ve feed from sensor (will find out when I get sensor)

Differences (things that exist on both but polarity/name has changed)

V1/2V5/6

Manu Light -veHold Light -ve

Door Light has 2 dedicated Pins one for constant +ve from battery and one for Door Open -ve switchDoor light has 1 dedicated pin for Door Open -ve switch, Uses the same +ve that the speedo uses

So... Work arounds:

-Demister Light will be wired into Hold Light as I have a manual and the hold light is orange so close enough

-LO and FWD Lights dont apply to me so will skip those

-I/C Spray Light doesnt apply to me so will skip that too

-Clock Illumination I will run this up from the stereo Illumination wire (if it exists)

-Will loop the temp gauge ground off another ground from somewhere i dont think it requires its own one

-Constant +ve for cluster, this already exists in my old cluster but is only used by the door light, so will use that.

-Speedo +ve and -ve feeds, I will have to run some new wires for these from the speed sensor when I get it

So aside from changing pins about between the plugs, there isnt really many issues to sort through, the most difficult is going to be putting in the speed sensor and wiring that

small update this time:

Have got the loom from the wreckers

PART NUMBER 81312 FA010 for those that are interested, this is the small loom that goes from the cluster to the connector box under the dash on the drivers side...

It has 4 plugs at the gauge end and 2 and the connector box end

1 of the 4 at the speedo end (the small yellow one)is used for the DCCD display unit or Auto display unit, nither of these apply to me, so ive extracted the pins from the other end to get this out of the loom

PAIN CAUTION!!!!! to remove the pins i poped open the cap and then gave each pin a good tug with some pliers, the pins have some rather sharp peices of metal on them and can easily slice you fingers open when they fly out at 50 miles an hour as i just found out....

Now... the 2 plugs for the connector box end.... cut them off, unless you want to repin every other plug in the whole car to make them fit and then extend the wires so it will reach as this whole loom is about 30cm long

more to come later

oh... theres also 2 yellow wires that go upto a plug which appears to be connected to a temp sensor... throw these away too as the V1/2 cabin temp sensor is behind that small grill in the AC controls

*This colour occurs twice @ B9 and A11

#For some reason A11 and A13 are a twisted pair inside the loom, like what you see when you pull apart a network cable

Ive now got 3 looms Ive taped the loom from plug A in Green, B in Black and C in Red to make it easier when working in the confines of the dash board.

Only thing ive noticed is with the plugs is that in some places ive got wires going to where the is no contact on the circuit board and some times I have no wire going to where there is a rather vital contact on the circuit board. Im thinking that I may have a V5 Cluster and a V6 Loom or maybe a JDM cluster and a NZ/Aus loom something like that anyway.

DISCLAIMER: In the past when working on other vehicles I have noticed that the wire colours in the loom swap around alot, so although C6 on mine is Pink, yours maybe another colour IE Green, I would strongly advise checking your loom carefully and identifying the colour associated with each pin

hope that makes sence... ive shuffled a few pins about in the plugs so they line up with the printed circuit on the cluster. I still have no pin/wire in C11 which is the Fuel Light pin... but I have no where to wire it to anyway so will leave it out for now

Quick update:

well... theres not much to say at the moment... Ive sort of had to put this on the backburner, as my weekends are all out of action for the next little while, last weekend i was incredibly drunk, this weekend im off to rotorua for work and next weekend im off to whakatane to help a mate collect a car.... but the weekend after that i will deffinatly be getting into this

OMG ive finally put them in!!!!!

SDC10031.jpg

Will finish the write up during the weekend

At the moment all thats left to finish on it is the Door Open Light isnt working, Speedo isnt working (think speed sensor is busted) and the hand brake light isnt working occasionally

But other than that its in and mostly working

I had to trim all 3 lugs off it and its now held in place by the trim around the front so its not actually screwed/bolted in as such, but I will be finalising a few things over the rest of the weekend

Guest lan_killa

thanks guys

there are still a few finishing touchs to be done, like the gaps on the sides, and the fact ive blown a whole pile of fuses while doing this, so that would explain the lack of a door light and may even explain why my speedo isnt working as its not getting 12V. Pretty much everything has worked with minimal hassle, all the warning lights worked first shot (except the door one), tacho worked first try, temp and fuel both worked first try so im pretty happy... I also need to wire in the clock, but OMG my fingers are sore from twisting wires all of yesterday

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
