I wouldn't regap iridiums or platinums. You risk cracking the coating off.

Buy the correct gap plugs to start with.

but sorry, what? i don't believe this explanation applies to stepper motor idle control on a subaru

a stepper motor is a multi coil motor, driven by a specific pwm-style signal. there is no feedback, the ecu does not 'read' the steps, it dictates them.

generally a stepper motor requires 4 or 6 wires, so i expect the subaru stepper has intermediate circuitry as the 3 wires are INC / DEC / COMMON

in terms of 'feedback' the ecu gathers information from the other sensors (crank,afm,temp,tps,o2 etc) and adjusts the idle valve in a sweeping manor until its happy with the idle condition.

ok, fair enough, i have not scoped the signals. but to me this makes more sense.
