How to replace BE5 (B4 TT) rear diff bushes? (THUD! THUD!)

Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody has replaced the rear diff bushes on these subies? Heard its really hard and have no idea where to start

Yes it is a mission!!!!

Theres a BE/BH legacy workshop manual on this forum somewhere, download it and theres a section on how to remove the rear diff.

The bushes arent that expensive.

I ended up making a G-Clamp type thing to help get the new bush in.

I also put new diff seals in and modify the diff breather setup to while the diff was out.

Yeah the hard bit is getting the bushes in and out. Dropping the diff is fairly basic.

They're a b*tch alright!! We smash them out with a punch then either hammer them back in with a copper hammer or make up a tool to press them back in. The hammer method is usually faster though.

getting them out is the easy bit. The old Hacksaw the outta ring twice trick and it just pops out. Getting them in took alot of swear words....

I had to get mine done when I got it, Even with dad being a mechanic it was easier / more cost effective to just get it done by a subaru workshop.

Yeah i had to get mine done too, think i only payed $200 for parts and labour though

From memory mine was around the 300 mark for parts and labour.

If I can move my rear diff a mm or 2 with 1 hand while lying on my back is that a good indication that the rear diff bushes are stuffed?

Look at the rear bushes. If you can see big splits through them then they need doing. A millimetre or 2 will be ok. A centimetre or 2 won't.

how hard is it to do on a bd5 tt? i just replaced my gbox mount and now thats tight its all loose down the back

BD/BG bushes are so fucking tight its not funny. They're like twice as hard to get out and in than a BE/BH.

great there is definetly slack in the drive train somewhere and i made sure i tighened the bolts up again but i think i may have tightened the gbox mount tomuch and the thread started to rotate and wouldnt undo again that wont be my problem will it?

just checked to make sure and sure enough it has some slack was looking under the car and half dropping the clutch at idle and you can see the front of the move about an inch maybe more

how much approx would it cost to get them chnaged in a bd5 sedan at a good mechanics shop?

if its to much is it do able on a sunday arvo?

how is it done?

drop drive shaft, undo the tee thing that holds the diff, undo diff? and go from there?

seeing its a be5 thread beter explain how to do it on them aswell

Identical setup. Just harder to get out and in.

did you do these yourself in the end??? im possibly looking at doing mine
