bg5 legacy turbo whine?

hey ive got a bg5 legacy wagon and when it gets to around 3000rpm it starts to whine, ive been told its the primary turbo (passenger side??) but i have replaced it with 2 diff turbos and it still makes the noise, could it be anything else or have i had a bad run of turbos??

Hey, I have the same problem with whining primary on my bg5. Was considering changing it cos thought it meant turbo was on way out but if you've already tried a couple maybe thats not the problem? Will be interesting to see what others have to say.

Have your replacements been the same turbo ie swap vf18 for vf18 or have you tried a newer model turbo?

na it had a vf20 on it and ive tryed a vf16 i think and then a vf18, i dont know what else to try?? maybe ive just had a bad run on turbos lol might try one more

mine used to whine from day one sold it 13k later still whining nev er had any problems though

Thats the same kind of noise my one made before I replaced it, I think you might have been replacing it with turbo's that were just as worn as your previous one, I ended up replacing mine with a brand spanker from Subaru (VF31 from later model B4 - more reliable) and that cured the problem, I was told to not even bother with second hand ones as they are all about rooted, mine was buggered at about 90km's, it sounded like a hover craft lol, I think it's one hell of a gamble your taking when you keep running a whiny one as they can shit the seals/bearings and goodbye engine - my workmate had it happen to him, fine one day then driving along 100kph engine check light came on a about 5 mins later it'd eaten all the oil from the sump and seized the engine. I highly doubt all situations will be the same as this though.
