Need to borrow a car - Dunedin

Ben

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So my B4 just threw its BEB .. great :( .

Just wondering whether anyone would have a spare car i could borrow in Dunedin while mine is being fixed in Southern Motors.

Dont need the car till Mon 5th Oct as i can get a ride to work / borrow a car till then.

Happy to fill the tank on return or something.

Cheers,

Ben

Yeah. Did it on the way back to dunedin from blossom fest. Drove it about 160kms to my house without it seizing or anything - it did however stall 3 times and sounds like a tractor.

No plans on going single or anything like that. I either plan to replace the engine and sell the car on, or get a full rebuild (including replacing all seals, timing belt, clutch etc) and keep the car for the next 5 years until my education is complete. A second hand engine would be a cheaper option but i would be wanting to take out a mechanical warranty which adds to the costs.

To do a rebuild Southern have quoted me 4.5-5k all up - obviously using genuine parts and 1 year warranty

Unsure of which way to swing. I figure if i sell my car what would i buy that is reliable and for about 6 to 10 grand. The only thing i could come up with was a 97-98 BZR 6spd toyota levin.

Sounds good. My mate has a 91 civic and seems to think he can rev it out to 11000rpm constantly and that the motor will hack it . Just waiting for the day for it to pop, could be a while though as its out of service due to a majorly slipping clutch ;D

and did you ring around all the other reconditioners? If your after a standard rebuilt lots of places will be able to do it as good for cheaper.

Yes i rang around 4 engine reconditioner places in the dunedin area. 3/4 of them could not give me a price without starting on the job itself due to not knowing extent of the damage. Still considering the thought of just banging another engine in the car and having gone with it. 3 subaru's owned now in past 3 years - 06 Legacy 3.0R, 02 Forester, 99 Legacy B4. Total incurred costs for repairs (excluding this rebuild situation) not far off $5900.

dont take to an engiune reconditioner as such, take it to a normal every day garage. they will then outwork the cylinder heads most likely and the crank to get polished/new one if you drove it all the way home....

if you going this far (over $5000), why not thinking of a single turbo? 8) 8)

Because i wouldnt know how to begin, who to go to, how long i plan on having the car now and last but not least I CANT AFFORD TO HAVE MY CAR OFF THE ROAD. If i had another car / one that i could borrow i would probably look into it as it would be a great wee project. Its just that time is money, and i am uterly dependent on my car to transport me to work and thus keep my job.

I'm sorry I can't recommend someone to do the rebuild, but just be careful of Southern Motorcourt. I feel like I got ripped off by them when I got my car serviced (which cost $270 for a standard service). They missed a few problems and caused a couple and failed to tell me that my exhaust had several holes in it and wouldn't pass warrant (which cost me $360 to fix Monday just gone). I know they are small things but if they miss a few simple problems on a standard service then what's it going to be like with a big job like an engine rebuild?

dude, i verry much doubt any half-pie garage would cause a problem by changing your oil. southern motorcourt has a great reputation... the foreman/service manager was at an mta meeting i went to in tauranga presenting certificates so i doubt he or his company/workmanship is dodgy.

good day

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
