89' RS Noisey Lifters

Guest

Recommended Posts

Well it happened, the infamous tickidy tick tick that develops on all 89 heads,

absolutely gutted, another re-build for the wife to go nutty at me about!

Not to worry theres an easy fix for this problem...WRX HEADs, muahahaha,

Ive already sourced a pair( lucky enough too, the seller threw in the plenum, injectors, harness, etc, so not quite the hassle first thought.

Well just have to wait for them to turn up and ill keep everyone updated with photos and posts, catcha

Drain the oil and put 2 litres of ATF in, and top up with fresh cheap engine oil. Leave the sucker running for an hour or 2 (or in the case of my Primera, drove it for 3 months) then drain it, throw a new filter on and fill it with good oil.

ATF has high detergent properties and cleans things out real good.

To be honest it was one of the best cars I have owned. Drove real well, awesome on gas. I can't remember why I sold it now.

ATF = automatic transmission fluid.

If you've ever seen inside a SR20 or SR18 and how they feed oil to the cams you would believe me. Its dripped onto the cams from 0.5mm holes from a 5mm tube. They block up so easy its not funny, then the cams run dry, squeak and wear out. The ATF made it look like a brand new engine inside, and the noise stopped within 30 mins. I just got too lazy to drain it again and figured it was an N/A engine, so its not going to do too much harm. That engine ran so quiet after that.

Edit - found a pic of one. You can see the exhaust cam oil feed tube clearly at the bottom. And note how gunky the whole area is. Mine was spotless after the ATF went through it.

could you not just run some diesel engine oil through it for a bit? pretty sure that has bulkloads of detergent in it..

Yeah you could do, but usually oil galleries and whatnot are blocked. ATF is real thin so penetrates the crap well and flushes it all out. The real danger is blocking up your oil filter with all the removed gunk.

Yeah and that's normal to have all that gunk sitting there. Its old oil that's congealed and sits on any level-ish surface. Subbies aren't so bad inside, its usually just the sump and windage tray that get most of that stuff stuck to it.

Regular oil changes kiddies!!

What is it? Just leave it idling for a while. Its not recommended to drive it (even though I did and got away with it).

Hmmmm, up to you but it could spell the end for the engine with that many k's on it.. That gunk will be helping to seal gaskets, rings etc.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
