Differences between NZ NEW/Jap import for BP Legacy

chris

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I tried searching but couldn't find anything legacy related. Im looking at buying a 2003-2006 Legacy non turbo 2.0R wagon. I have seen a few on trademe and was wondering what the differences are (if any between Jap imports and NZ New).

I tried looking at wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Legacy_%28fourth_generation%29 but it seems pretty USA focused.

Hope you guys can help me out,

Chris

IMO the 2.0R's are bags of trouble. They always seem to have real issues with detonation and pulling timing, and end up as gutless pigs (yes, more than normal). I would go for a 2.5 as they are supposed to be ok to run on 91 (not that I would).

And get a NZ new. The Jap import ones are ok, but if things turn to crap on them with ECU's etc, they are very hard to get info for as they are programmed different to the NZ new. Plus the Jap ones will need a new stereo etc or at least a band expander.

I would actually suggest getting a 3.0 model, Subaru put a lot of money into designing the H6 motor and they are sweet as a nut. Nice and smooth, quiet, more reliable too - they are chain drive, plus don't have the rocker cover issues / oil leaks of the EJ.

Um yes they do. And they like to drink oil.....

Still no oil leaks on the H6 at 148,000km.

Mine doesn't leak or drink a single drop at 102kms either...

Oh yes they do drink oil, +1 to Boostin

and leak from chain covers, hence the huge plastic undertray to catch the oil :)

Not to mention out of round valve seats !! from factory

BH and BP H6's are very different engines. I would rather have a BH H6 over a BP any day.

I've seen BP H6's empty a sump (6.5L) in 2000km. Oh and Subaru NZ say that a litre every 1000km is acceptable oil consumption, so your BP H6 will run out of oil before the next change at 10,000km.

Ours had an injector replaced very early in it's life (around ~30k). Other than that and a few electrical problems (CD player and trip computer readout), it is going strong at ~80k. NZ new so Subaru paid for the injector and a replacement stereo head unit. They went halfsies on the trip readout (which was out of warranty).

They're not too bad. We're starting to see a few blown turbos as of late, and injectors needing replacement.

Trip meters, stereos, and air/fuel ratio sensors (front oxygen sensor) are all common too.

Ah, did not know that. Assumed that Subaru wouldn't break what was already working well! Apparently not! I stand corrected...

If that was true we would never have got a twin turbo....

To be fair thats no different to other manufacturers like BMW and Audi. And still better than a rotary ;)

And I think a litre in 10,000km is excessive.... Oh well.

Had my 3.0R for 15k. Its in at Winger for its 100k service today. Haven't had any trouble with oil at all. It has been a great engine so far.

Auto?? They are better with the oil problem, but still not great.

Yeah 99% of the time when they come in going nunga nunga its a 6 speed. Its funny how they didn't notice the massive chain noise for a few weeks before!!

Oh I agree that its excessive, none of my Subarus have really used any oil at all. Just pointing out that theres not much point having a rant about them calling it acceptable when other manufacturers say the same thing - its just standard corporate ass-covering really.

My uncle had a BP H6 Outback (or does the Outback get a different code?) for a few years from new and never mentioned anything about it using oil.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
