Help Knocking on the Legacy MY99 GTB

Bought a legacy wagon MY99, Manual, Lady owner 7 years in NZ, unmolested example from a guy who runs a garage in Hamilton.. Test drove it..nice

He changed the oil day before i picked it up (Today). I then nipped home and popped out this evening done around 30kms on the way home small knocking noise screeching (like a belt) then bigger knocking noise know engine knock.... car did feel unpowered (just got rid of the wrx 200kw so it didnt send the alarm bells ringing straight away)...

So now car is on the path with a knocking noise, i dare not drive it... WTF im soooo pissed off :-[

What could it be? spun rod bearing? big end?

Options going forward? New motor? Single turbo conversion?

Anyone help? Im in Hamilton- any decent scooby garages

I would be calling the prick and getting him to come get it and fix it!!!!

I have heard of people doing a swifty and letting someone test drive a car then changing the motor over night to a shitter (Saying i will do an oil change for ya.) after it has been sold...

You should be able to negotiate something surely.

He is coming to "look" at it tmw... although im not holding my breath... Disputes tribunal if it goes sour

As a buyer you have right's don't you? or is that only when buying from a dealership? (the lemon law or whatever it is)

But yeah, the knocking, is it coming from the engine itself? is it loud, did it get progressivly louder?

Only when buying from a dealer, although he gave me a receipt from his garage for the car so technically it went through the "business" however it says on the consumer website disputes tribunal...i will give him an opportunity to put things right..i mean he is a mechanic of 30years!!

Silly question - have you checked that it's not leaking oil out the oil drain/filter? Have you checked the oil level?

Yes already did that, did it when i picked it up and did it when i got home still oil in there

Out of curiosity how much oil to fill it? from empty

if its any thing like my b4 its about 4.5 to 5L of oil

yea if he did it right and filled it ran it 4 30c or so and re filled it to the line its exactly 5L.

I thought the B4's were 4.5L and the 3.0R was 5L from empty?

4.5 for the 4's. BH 6's take 5.8 and BP 6's take 6.5.

You can drag anyone to court if they sell you a falsely advertised vehicle - it's just far more to your advantage if they are a dealer. If it's got a fried engine and didn't say 'AS IS, WHERE IS', then the ball is in your court.

A privately purchased vehicle comes with no warranty what so ever. If you take him to disputes tribunal you may get somewhere, but all he will say is you screwed it (anyone can kill a car in a night if thrashed).

I would be saying to him outright you want your money back and trying to appeal to his common decency

Other than that hire some heavies to get your money back ;D

iv done mine twice now and both times is taken all 5L after starten it to get oil thru the filter it sits jst above the fill line when completly cold

He said the fram oil filter is knackered, as he changed the oil and filter he has pressure tested another engine with this filter and it was causingoil starvation and it went......

Dunno how true but soon see what the new engine goes like!

When i did a BEB it had a Fram filter and Valvoline oil in it, i stay away from both now.

I only used a Fram because Wingers were closed and we were heading away on a long trip that night.

Thats why I always make sure I have at least 1 spare filter!!

yep, i'v got 2 spare filters and 2 packs of ELF oil always in the garage.

Update-

Got the car back, all seems well (Fingers crossed) new engine has 100k on it so should be ok.....

The engine bay smoked a little after the first run and i was like FFS but it seems it was just oil from the rebuild on the block burning off, but just sometimes i smell a whiff of oil burning.....sounds ominous i know!

The other thing is im not sure if its boosting right though... hard to tell seems to lag between primary and secondary kicking in, no smoke, whines, rattles or knocks but just seems to fade from primary then pull ok once past 5k rpm on secondary

boost leak? BBOD? or is it just manual gtb's? LOL

The cable in the boot that opens the exhaust has snapped will that cause it?
