My internet disconnects...

Hoping some net whizz on here can help me...

Im running a hardwire modem/router to two computers.

For some reason one and only one of them keeps disconnectiong from the internet during download, or youtube vids, or just when its been used for a sustained period of time. But the other computer never has any issues.

There seems no regularity to the disconnect other than the more pressure I put on it (Download, youtube vid, multiple open pages etc) the quicker it disconnects.

It also doesnt seem to register the disconnect, there is no warning in the bottom right hand corner as you get if say you disconnect manualy or a cord is unplugged but its disconnected just wont load pages or anything anymore.

Also as soon as I reset the computer its fine to go again.

I am running XP pro, and my Broadband is through Xtra.

Anyone got any ideas?

Hmmm. OK, follow this http://www.wikihow.com/Ping-an-IP-Address

But first you need to find the IP of your router. So, in the instructions, after step 1, before step 2 ( where you type ping ), type "ipconfig" with no apostrophes.

Write down the number after Default Gateway. It'll be 192.168. something . something.

That's the number you ping.

So for me :

C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

I write down 192.168.1.1

Then I do this :

C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>ping 192.168.1.1

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 1ms

C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>

And from that it's the first step in figuring out your problem. Try it now with your working connection.

The part :

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 1ms

Helps in eliminating your physical layer of connection as a problem.

Ok so I got...

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

Mean anything??? lol

- Edit -

Yeah it was 10.1.1.4 Dlink as you say Ben

ample.

Yep ! Which IP were you pinging ?

Say for example, what happens if you put in another number, ummm, 58.84.224.0

You sure you pinged the gateway and not your own IP address?

(He beat me to it, I'll leave it to chris and go back to playing minesweeper :P)

Yeah correct I was pinging the IP not the gateway

when I ping the gateway (10.1.1.1 as you say) I get

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms

Do I now need to make it disconnect and try that again when its disconnected?

If I load up a youtube vid, or set something bigger than say 10 meg to dload it cuts on me 90% of the time. If not with that vid or dload doing another straight after defo will.

Very interesting ! Yeah, for sure, try that, ping those two IP's and let us know the results.

If they fail straight away, right click on those icons you mentioned on the system tray, select repair, and see if it then goes back to normal.

Ok so once I got it to disconnect for 10.1.1.1 I got...

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

For 58.84.224.0 I got...

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

As always no warning from anywhere it had gone, just that pages wont load and it gives me the shitty Explorer connection help wizard thing which informs me I have no connection.

Johnny, what make and model ADSL modem/router are you using? I saw D-Link mentioned but I need to confirm this as part of diagnosis.

If you can find out I also need to know the make and model of your network card and if it's built onto you motherboard (in this case the make and model of your motherboard will suffice).

Where am I going with this? Well D-Links are known to crash when they get to 100 connections and they don't like letting go of connections unless you reboot them. The strange thing with this is that it's only affecting 1 of your computers so it could be your NIC (network card) or NIC drivers that are crashing on only that computer.

One thing I would check is that power savings is turned off on the network card, go into device manager, double click on your network card, under the Power Management tab, make sure "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is not ticked...

But from your ping results it does seem like your router is at fault

Check your phone cables and ethernet cables are away from other power cables. This can causes undue signal loss and cut your connection also.

Get into your modem and re - type your username and password and reboot the modem.

If that doesnt work, chuck your modem away. I have plenty of spares i could send.

      Afternoon team,
      im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
      Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

      Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
