Legacy factory stereo sounds tinny, is it headunit or speakers?

Hi,

We have a nana-spec 1996 JDM 2.0litre TX type S Legacy with the factory original am/fm cassette deck head unit.

It sounds tinny, but is it likely to be the speakers or the headunit (or both) thats to blame?

We want to upgrade the head unit to a cd/mp3 model soon, but is this gonna be a waste of time unless we upgrade the speakers too?

I know the speakers are old and are likely to be deteriorating - but we aren't audiophiles so don't need 110% perfect sound - just would prefer no static-y sounds that we have now.

Any ideas?

is it static or tinny?

tinny will be speakers

static can be signal or loose connection or speaker

will be worth doing both. Only will cost around 200 dollars for new head unit plus two 6.5" speakers, if you go to the right place. will make a world of a difference.

Remove stereo. Junk car. Buy new less tinny car. Reinstall stereo. Lol.

It will be the speakers for sure. Factory speakers are okay when new, but after 14 years the weak foam surrounds will have deteriorated something chronic. I bet the surrounds will fall apart in your hands if u were to take them out.

As has been said you'll be able to pick up a combo pretty cheap if you arent too fussed on high quality stuff. I'd certainly recommend replacing both at the same time, if you can. But if not, do the speakers first.

lol i know about that when i had my 96 rsb! (was about 10 years old whan i had it) foam surrounds had fallen apart!

Yeah the factory speakers are crap. The cones crack and the rubber/foam parts all turn to dust.

I put 2 sets of cheap Kenwood dual cone speakers ($45 a set) and an old Pioneer 50W x 4 head deck in the BG TT I'm doing up to sell, and it sounds awesome!! Nice and clear, and plenty of bass.

If you're in chch, I've got a box of speakers, 6x 6.5" + 2 6x9's. I've got 2 sony xplod 6.5" you can take away for 30

You can almost guarantee your cone rubbers have disintegrated. Tends to ruin the speaker compression and therefore acoustics

We got a set of speakers from the supercheap auto sale, now I need to find out how to remove the door card without breaking the tabs & clips.

I can only find three screw covers (shown circled in red in second photo) are there any more? Whats the trick to removing the cards?

Tried taking just the speaker cover off, but turns out its all molded as one with the rest of the door card - glad I didn't use more force & munt it

yeap, you guys were right on the money - I hadn't even finished taking the door cards off & the rubber surrounds were already falling out of the gap and to the ground!

So I'm guessing I just pull the old speaker wires out of the bottom of the white connector box & simply insert the new wires as they were, white to white & stripe to stripe?

Yup, and your new speakers should also fit into those angled plastic brackets. I think I had to file mine in a couple of spots to get the speaker to sit flat, but nothing major. And pay attention to polarity, ie whether white or stripe is positive or negative.

Quite surprised the factory original speakers were Clarions. Even tho the foam has deteriorated, do they have any other use or is it time for the dump?
