Cold Air Box

Guest

Recommended Posts

Righto, I'm in the process of making myself a cold air box for the "DeForester" as I recently bought myself an A'PEXi pod for a bday present to self. I'm after any relevant info on materials I should use, design, construction and anything else that comes to mind.

Thanks

Mat

I have a K&N cone *97% Brand new* off a mate, and though about doing a ghetto install job. Instead I didn't... :-\

Anyway, you would preddy much chop off the Airbox and use some metal clips or fastner from Bunnings etc to attach the Pod to the MAF Sensor, *this way it won't screw with your ecu too much & run rich* You won't have to buy all the extra piping, haha. ;D

POD => MAF SENSOR =>

The A'PEXi pod I've got bolted directly onto the AFM so no worries with mounting it (it even came with brackets which bolted into the factory holes) Just after advice on constructing a cold air box for it now as I have noticed it does get damn hot during the day!

In my racecar it's just made out of 1mm mild steel, doesn't really do much but its better than nothing... I've seen a lot of people use foam around the top half so it seals off against the bonnet

I would avoid painting it black, i had the box on my BMW painted black at first, but the box was getting so hot, just absorbing all the heat from the engine. Have since painted it silver/chrome, and it works waaaaay better.

doesnt black absorb infra-red as well? Regardless - something reflective will be betterer than black

in regards to colour... im sure it prolly wasnt the best choice... it was purely for looks... but the colour makes no difference... was just saying thats what was done on my car... its an idea...

I don't think water would be a problem like that, it's when you start playing with cold air intakes you gotta worry.

(there was a guy on NASIOC last week who hydraulic'd his engine cause he went though the mother of all puddles in the middle of the night with his CAI)

er black attracts heat in the form of light waves (UV/sunlight) not heat from radiant source

BUT paint will keep it warmer for longer

im not happy with this statement..

first off, regarding light, surface colours don't attract, they absorb

secondly a silver/shiny/bright surface or paint will reflect thermal radiation better than a dark surface.

when i first ran the pod under the guard some water did get in and frak'd with the afm but that was cause the plastic inner guard was worn at the top and water was flung into the guard space off the wheels. the lugs holding the inner guard in place at the front had also popped out and the damn thing was hanging down acting as a water scoop! lol Got it all sorted now. If you want cold air... a pod under the guard is an option for you. I looked at several cold air box setups but they all sucked in air through the factory hole in the engine bay wall which was only 3" anyway and restrictive. If you cut the hole bigger some wof places will ping you but if u can get away with it sweet as. Also, unless u have an absolutely airtight seal between the air box and the engine bay.....you will suck in hot air.....it can't be avoided. At least you have options :-)

Confusing, Haha, im wanting to put a pd in tha wrx as its just currently running the standard Air Box, sounds like it could be harder than first though, if i get a pic of my engine bay perhaps someone could point out what im needing to do..lol..

I might go for an old school look (as in carbies, pushrods, and 3speed manual style old school) and put a round/oval air cleaner out of the bonnet. Guaranteed cold air and no water. And something that shakes around with the engine.

It also has the added benifit of "WTF is that for?" looks. Which are always great.

*note that this post was, in all likelyhood, all talk*

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
