Rebuilding a gearbox

I am thinking about buying a gearbox and rebuilding it before i put into my car, so that way i know that it will feel mint.

I am wanting to know hard it is to do, i have done all the work on my car so far, along with pulling engines apart, and want to give this ago.

I think it was Kameniko who had done a picture tutorial thingy for this procedure back before the site died. Could try pm'ing him and see if he had the photo's and text saved somewhere.

(He's also a bit busy this week doing trackdays).

the difficulty with doing gearboxes is that you need to ensure you have the correct amount of play in the front diff side bearings. you cant have them too lose or too tight.

as to the correct amount of play, i dont know.

WTF .... you dont need to change this

There are many tricks to do one of these gearbox's properly

There are special places you need to press these apart

Done wrong normally = no 5th gear after assembly

or a costly trip to replace the "H" gear because you've broken a tooth off

WTF .... you dont need to change this

still all needs to be checked, would suggest getting all gears crack tested and shot peined to.

Agreed everything needs to be checked

I am yet to find a front diff incorrectly set from factory

Even when bearings are replaced i am yet to adjust from factory setting to correct tooth marking or bearing preload
