wrx tick/knock/tapping

My wrx has been doing this for a year and im f***ing sick of it as im always getting up starting it cold in the early hours and it does it.

It doesnt do it at idle, but when i accelerate it starts quite loud, it dies off at about 2800 revs and when its walm it also stops??

but i still dont think its dead on.

ive been told it may be the lifters?

Quick question, what oil do you use?

I just got it serviced they put 10w 30 I think?

When I first got it I think it was on 5w something so it has been thickened once? It's done 182000 now so is starting to get up there

If it's lifters, one possible solution could be to use a thicker oil, 10w40. But I'm not sure what the noise is sorry.

Does this sound like your problem?? I took that of my car when it's cold. Stays like that until it's warm.

its about that loud but its not the exact same noise. im sorry i cant be more helpfull il try and get a video in a day or two but dont know if i can. whats that noise then?

I think it might very very little piston slap, but I honestly don't have a clue..

Always been like that since I've owned the car. My guess is it's just a mild case of piston slap but as soon as she's warmed up the noise goes away.

If you've got a warranty I'd take it in and tell them about it.

I've had my car for almost year (Will be in june/july. I forgot)

take it in under warranty mate, tell them you want it fully checked out as is making unusual noises get cylinders & pisons measured etc. I can definitely hear piston slap as it is being reversed out of the garage

My old wagon used to sound a bit like a diesel when you started it up in the morning. It was basically because one of the previous owners used to thrash the tits off it cold so it had a tiny bit of piston slap. Went away when it was warm and between myself and my cousin (who I sold it to) we put a fair few kms on it with no problems.

i've been told to use 15w 40 for oil on subarus

For some reason today at 7pm when i drove it cold it didnt do it at all?? im lost?

So i dont neeed to worry that my motor will blow up??

The next service ill put 15w 40 in.

Mines stayed as it is. I don't push it while it's cold but it can feel like it's being a slow poke until it's warmer.

I'd definitely take it in while it's under warranty and get them to have a look.

mines no slower when it's cold idont think? I bet the warranty guys will just tell me to piss off! I just don't see why it didn't do it today.

if it has forged internals it'll knock when its cold and come right when its warmed up i've heard of this heaps with the sti's

yup i got abit of noise from my motor too.and its 10 000ks off a rebuild.took it back to possum bournes they hada quick look and just said its cause of the sti pistions and 5w30 oil.its too thin oil when its cold and warming the car up.he told me to try 10w40 and see how it goes.

Well my cars jdm so dont they have semi forged pistons?that could be why?

yup i got the same sti semi forgd.garry coper told me sti piston will always give abit of slap consider they are semi forged.too be onest iv never heard a subaru that doesnt make weird noises lol
