Hi all, strange request on here but someone may know...

I need a good mechanic in the Churton park area to give a car a good going over Car I want looked at is a 2001, RS200 Triptronic Altezza.

I Test drove it today and the car was awesome except one small issue with it stalling once at an intersection, im tossing up whether I buy and fix or diagnose then buy. If anyone knows a good local mechanic it may influence my decision.

Any input on a good mechanic welcome, Toyota experienced preferable.

my subaru used to do exactly that when I bought it. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was nothing to worry about, just warm air influincing the afm or something like that. The in for a full rebuild now because the engine was completely fucked. melted pistons, a conrod when through a piston and pretty much the whole shortblock needs replacing. so be carefull with what it is!! I was lucky that my engine still had warrenty left on it otherwise it would have been a lot worse for mee.

I have a few ideas, may be as simple as bad fuel or fouled plugs as its sat for a little while without use.

Or could be MAF, Torque converter etc...

Really depends if I trust the seller or not lol.

yeah theyre even paying for the shipping to auckland and back to my place :o SO awesome service! It went though my mind but i decided to get it propperly rebuilt into a 2nd hand closed deck block. Its getting cosworth bearins pistons and high compression gaskets (used in the 2011 cosworth subaru) a new nitrited cranck shaft eagle forged rods etc etc should be good up to 600 hp lol so then I can mod it as much as I like without having to worry about it anymore and all I have to pay for it the price difference between stock parts and the parts I want ;D so pretty stocked with that

Get an AA check, then if they don't pick up on any errors/faults- they have to pay for the repairs :)

Is that right??? Do they do mechanical checks or only body etc?

If they guarantee there inspections I might go to them. I usually steer clear of AA as I didn't think they were very thorough engine wise.

Yes is that the truth? Better than a garage is some aspects.

    Our inspection covers
Exterior inspect the vehicle chassis & panels for rust, dents, scratches & accident damage
Interior inspect all interior trim, dash & instruments for condition and operation including the air-conditioning system.
Drive line we check for correct operation of all drive train components including the transmission, differential, CV joints etc
Engine we use specialist diagnostic equipment to assist with assessing the general state of the engine including conducting a relative compression test
Cooling system we inspect the cooling systems general operation including pressure testing for leaks coolant fluid condition
Suspension & steering we inspect steering & suspension components for effective operation, damage or fluid leaks
Brakes we test brake performance under normal load conditions and check all visual brake components including brake linings – Note: where visible without removing the wheels.
Wheels & tyres we inspect wheels tyres for tread depth and general condition
Vehicle operation we test drive the vehicle and assess the overall performance & drivability. We check for example… transmission shift quality, general engine performance, drive line vibration, brake performance & road handling.

    Our inspection doesn’t cover

Exterior we do not remove any covers, trim, panels which in some cases can hide defects

Interior while we inspect the majority of interior components and accessories… in some cases we are unable to accurately assess the operation some vehicle features… e.g. some functionality of electronic memory seats,

Drive line as dismantling mechanical components is not part of a standard inspection we are unable to check internal drive line components (differential, transmission gears, wheel bearings etc…) for levels of wear or deterioration.

Engine to provide a comprehensive assessment of all of the internal engine components (pistons, crankshaft, and bearings) the entire engine would require dismantling…this is cost prohibitive.

Cooling system we do not dismantle the radiator or remove radiator hoses and check internal components of the cooling system therefore some defects may be undetected.

Suspension & steering we do not remove or dismantle any suspension components therefore some internal faults may be undetected.

Brakes our focus on vehicle safety is paramount however during a standard inspection we do not remove the wheels or brake drums therefore in some cases we are unable to assess the amount of brake lining wear.

Wheels & tyres we inspect wheels tyres for tread depth and general condition

Vehicle operation in some cases due to heavy traffic conditions we are unable to conduct an appropriate road test – this will be clearly identified on your report.

Upon reading their T&Cs, found this

Provided we have acted with reasonable care and skill, we will not be responsible for any defects or problems with the vehicle that are not identified or identifiable with an inspection of this kind.

Because this is a limited inspection, we do not warrant the condition of the vehicle at the time of purchase.

  • 4 weeks later...

AA Checks are pretty crap in Welli, I've got a mechanic mate who went over a merc they checked and found 1/2 dozen faults they missed.

He reckons to tkae it to VTNZ for a pre-purchase inspection $150 is cheap compared to buying a lemon that costs you thousands.

Or take it to Rutherford and Bond in Porirua

Well long story short I took it to a mechanic who found nothing wrong so I took a risk that the guy was being straight up and the stalling issue was new.

I picked it up, filled it with 98, drove it back to Wanganui, did plugs and leads and I got lucky and so far seems fine, I have done 4000kms in it since picking it up without a hitch.

Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.
