I think my external wastegate is broken

I ve just brought a v7 wrx, and it seems laking in power. I think its the Ex wastegate is letting out too much pressure or something, as it starts making the gate noise at around 2500 3000 revs. Then as the revs go up it gets louder but the car just doesn't seem to go anywhere much..lol and it just doesn't pull like a norm rex.

Its got vf28 turbo on it, a 500hp walbro fuel pump, and a sti air flow meter. Its also got a boost tap too.

Any info would help. cheers

Does it have a boost gauge? Sounds like its set to about 7psi to make noise and not power.

p.s. get it plumbed back into the exhaust.

Bet its one of the cheap knock off tials and the diaphrams gone on it.

Mine did the same thing, fuck all boost and sounded like a tractor at low revs.

One reason why I will only ever buy geniune again.

a while back i got a waste gate which some one pinched the diaphram between the sealing surface which you bolt the top on. it pinched the diaphram and it ripped . . but this was leaking on idle too

It can also be due to heat. Mine only did it after a bit of driving. Did do it on idle too but was only just noticable down low.

If you put your hand over the outlet, you could feel it escaping.

Just noticed the tap was wound up tight from last owner. I put a boost gauge in, and it was running around 5 pounds..lol.. so i wound it loose and slowly took it up to a nice 11 pounds.. now shes purring like it should.. so relieved. Gate sounds mean as now, opens up around 4 n half revs.. mmmmean.. think ill have to suss a plumb back option now for the wofs

OP maybe turn the boost tap further?? or better yet get rid of it and go EBC

or better yet, go back to the internal gate hahaha.

maybe the internal gate is leaking, has it been fully welded or is there a bracket holding it closed?

or even worse none of the above

i found with my internal it would only creep open after 16Pound . like if i set my external on 16 it would be fine . go any higher and it wouldn't hold as internal was creeping open .this is with actuator still on holding gate shut . now have a bracket holding internal shut fully hard and 20Pound no problem :-)
