Car Imported With Structural Damage

Hi Guys,

Just did a car jam report on a vehicle I want to look at tonight, reads: 'vehicle was imported with structural damage'

Is anyone able to explain to me a) how serious this is? b) the ramifications, if any? c) if there is any way to find out the specific damage?

well youd need to fix it and get it re vin'd for a start.

if it has been fixed properly, it will be fine.

IF....

it may be minor damage. it may have been a total write off. i think the only way you would be able to tell is to see the original import forms

The vehicle has been in NZ for 2 years with 2 owners, obviously been fixed at some stage. I will call the original importer and see if they are receptive to supplying relevant documents, I would say no but can only try

i think they should... its in their interests to prove that any work done has reached the appropriate standard.

they referred me to NZTA, stating that all paperwork will be held by them

Having seen the quality of some of the "structural damage" repairs etc that has been turned away I'd say the damage would be fairly minor.

Atleast imported damgaed cars are repaired to a decent std, NZ crashed cars can be fixed anyway the panel beater likes

When I crashed mine, I had it repaired professionally.And it came with complete repair printouts an laser guided chassis reports(or what ever machine thingy they use)... If it doesn't have those id get it checked out before you go any further cause its not something you wana have to find out next wof. Really if its been repaired properly it shouldn't have any issue but tell tale signs would be steering related, if you drive it and its not perfect id be very skeptical,

Most Kiwi guys are great at repairs

Shall I just say its often those ones brought from auctions as damaged cars that are often repaired on the cheap and put back into service again

A car I recently saw had a "bogged up" chassis rail - repaired here in NZ - real dangerous stuff

Once a coat of paint is on - it can be very hard to tell what is underneath, and they still drive straight as a die

Fully agree here , a kicked it guard takes a mint grade 5 down to 3 !

They are so harsh it's just not funny

yeah... if it was a nz write off and repair by insurance company i wouldnt touch it with a 10 ft barge pole.

but in order to get it past vtnz import compliance damn thats gotta be a good repair.
