89 RS BEB - engine replacement option

hey guys my baby has just run a BEB and im thinking of upgrading engines. ive found this EJ20T out of a version 5 STI

would i have any troubles putting this in? how would i go about doing the ecu wiring? will the STI ecu plug straight in?

It'll bolt up though I think RS only has 4 instead of the 8 the newer engine used?

And you'd have to use a V1-2 STi ecu because of 4 plugs.

You'll likely need the whole loom. Aren't these OBD-II?

no they are not OBDII

the engine u looking at are phase 2 engine more work to get it going unless it comes with looms ecu afm

you will need someone that knows about electrical such as a autosparky.. they charge from $1000 up... depends who u know

yes its phase 2 motor BUT it has v4 phase 1 heads so you can just bolt all your manifolds on form your rs and it will drop straight in and work mint, then later could do link etc.

coool sounds awesome so far. A few more questions. Will my gbox bolt up to it? Im thinking not. Would a b4 gearbox bolt up to it? I think the version 5 sti has 8 bolt bellhousing. Correct me if im wrong. And would i have to re loom EVERYTHiNG?

u want the same ratio as your rear diff whatever you do.

As long as you blank of the other 4 holes as SOME wof guys will pull you up as there is empty holes

u cant really bolt a phase2 manifold into a phase1 heads... looks like a ver5/6 manifold there... well unless its got adpator plate to fit?

yea im thinking of getting a new gearbox too, old one isnt too flash and dont wanna be ripping it apart too often.

im getting a whole engine with manifolds so i wont be using my rs manifolds. would my downpipe bolt striaght onto the VF29?

so im sweet for gearbox and motor

can someone explain how the wiring would go. im getting the full loom and ecu so im thinkin its not going to be too bad :-/ can someone please confirm for me

After I blew my original BC5 engine I dropped a version 3 sti into it. I was told many times that a V4 was better than the 3, but I brought what I could afford at the time. And the 3 never disapointed.I think no matter what engine you get , just make sure you get it installed by someone who knows a thing or two about subarus

you could run any phase 1 heads but just use original intake and a link......would save doing any wiring

i would LOVE to use a link but cant afford it atm or anytime soon unfortunately

since im getting a loom and ecu with it, would it be possible to swap the loom with my RS one and then just re pin the accessories like speedo etc...

at the end of it paying to get your car re-loomed to accept another standard ecu wouldn't be economical.

when for the same $$$ a possum link or g1 link could be installed +tuned.

(would also be a simple plug and play unit)

or you could go for a slightly newer engine where you have the option to re-flash the ecu.

just putting options out there for you not telling you what to do

im also by no means an expert either.

for that plus an engine plus all the wiring work = too much hassle for an ol RS

i think im going to find a phase 1 sti engine and just use that and the ecu should be 4 plug which will fit straight into mine?

and ill be on the look for a RSB/GTB gearbox with matching rear diff if anyone's got one
