Installing RA close ratio 4.111 gearbox in 1999 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Hi,

i have recently had the misfortune(soon to be fortunate) of actually blowing up a gear (4th) i have searched these forums for information but none directly answers my question. my question is what would need to be done in order to install a Subaru 4.111 ratio gearbox (i would assume out of an RA) into a wrx that has a standard 4.444 with no engine mods. im in a slight hurry as i will be driving down to christchurch for the mega meet woohhoooo.

needs rear diff to match

you will need a 4.111 diff to match the gearbox if your original one was 4.444

otherwise you will get some issues

ok sweet where can i get that from pm any diff and gearbox offers im keen beans to get the acceleration

just as a little sense of humour as well i went to a reputable performance shop today where i was gunna buy a bov and spoke to the rep (must have been a trainee) i asked him if they had any to which he replied "is that for a naturally aspirated or a forced induction subaru ::)" my friend had to seal the deal for me as i couldnt talk to this person i was laughing too hard

or you could just swap out your old front diff into the new box and save some cash

might be easier to just swap out for another 4.444 box ...... that would be the easiest

This is for a road car is it? If your not going to run DCCD there isn't much fun in having a close ratio GB, they rev a lot higher in 5th gear which is a bit of a PITA on long trips etc.

4.111 as a simple ratio is actually "longer" than 4.444 if anyone is wondering. So without knowing the gearbox code I wouldn't assume that the gearbox is "close" or "short" or "RA" etc. Alot of the early boxes were 4.111 so the diff out of an early Legacy would be the right ratio but you then have the problem of making sure it has the correct axles.
