wrx front axles

Recommended Posts

Ok im going to do the clutch in my wagon myself. I just need to know how to get the front axles out of the side of the box. I have watched some YouTube vids of how to remove box and it looks like they disconnect the axles from the hubs??? Is there a way around that so i dont have to go down that road and just take them out of the side of box?

Take the hub off the lower ball joint and then you can get them off the stub axles on the gearbox without removing from the box. Other way is to undo the two big bolts at the bottom of the strut to allow the hub to rotate outwards.

when i did it - i simply dropped the 2 strut mounting bolts off the hub allowing the hub to "flop" down - (marke the top bolts as theyre camber bolts - twink works well to mark orientation)

when hub is flopped down the axle will be able to come off the splines on the gearbox (once u use a punch to remove the pin in the cv cup)

remember to refit the camber bolt in same orientation ( but it might not even be set correctly anyway :P )

once the front cvs are off the splines and moved out the way its just like removing a RWD gearbox - remove starter (disconnect battery first) - remove drive shaft - remove the clutch fork pivot pin and remove the bell housing bolts and vwaa laa box will come out -

if you havent read up about the clutch fork pin yet

there is a hex keyed blanking plug behind the starter - remove that and use a long m8 (from memory im pretty sure its M8) bolt and wind the bolt into the pin and remove the pin before trying to split gearbox from engine

lol lol all good man - sounds like u havent done a box before ? drain the oil before u fark with the box or youll get a mean mess on the floor LOL

hate it whel oil is running down your arm :(

i kind of worded it in the wrong order

i would

drain oil

remove battery - terminal

remove starter

remove clutch pin

remove slave cylinder

remove speedo cable and wiring on box

knock pins from cvs

drop struts off hubs and slip axles off box

remove drive shaft ( u can just drop hanger bearing and slide the yoke out and move it out the way

remove gear shift linkages

remove bell housing bolts

support gearbox with jack and remove x member

remove gearbox

i dont think ive missed anything

it can all be done with the car up on 4 axle stands as high as u can get it

i allways suggest dropping the flywheel at BNT to get the flywheel machined

and is allways a good idea to replace rear crank seal while youre in there - cos later on down the track if it leaks its all gotta come back out again LOL

on a side note - did u find the silvia a royal prick to get the box back onto the splines ? FARK i had a night mare the first time i did it - wasnt nice at all - frikken huge bell housing loves to hit the firewall - even with engine x member lowered still had to twist the gearbox over 90 degrees to slide it in and out

Yes your exactly right! They are a right prick of a box. Cool i was concerned about them linkages. Do i access them from under the car or from inside?

Right, Im at the stage when I need to remove my gear linkages but an abit unsure of how to do it.... Alson the torx plug, what size is the torx bit coz I have none and will need to go buy some. Any help will be good. Ohh yer and the driveshaft (bearing hanger) what is that??

Torx plug ? Pretty sure it's a metric Allen key ? Been ages since I've done it tho

The linkages from memory is 1x 12mm but on each at gearbox end - one has a spring on it - one has 2 bolts at the gear stick end - been a while since I've done it however

Are you from Auckland ?

Have a quick squizz here

http://www.subaru-impreza-parts.co.uk/products/subaru-impreza-parts/subaru-impreza-transmission-parts/gc8-pfl-5spd-gear-linkage.html

Shows u were the linkage bolts are

I'm sorry if I was wrong earlier about leaving the stick in there - but it's actually been years since I've done a suby box - I thought u could leave the stick in there - bit looking at the pics I think u might have to remove the stick -

If in doubt just pull the stick lol. (haha just re read that :P)

Yer left Ak when I was 13 lol. I had a sniff on youtube and It looks as though ya have to pry the linkage that has the bush onit then I will be able to get to the 12mm bolt to take the other linkage off. Yer does look as though the whole stick comes out a. I will do that all tomorrow. Tired, dirty and half pissed now lol. Chur.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
