Replacing wrx heads-bent valve due to last owner

Recommended Posts

So my wrx has had a tappity tap since day I bought it, I wasn't to bothered but now it's really bugging me.diagnosed as a bent valve- back story last owner had cambelt snap got replaced but obviously the &$@?!' mechanics didn't check anything.

So how much for heads and what kinda cost labour wise

I've found a few on trademe but yeah

Anyone here got heads for a 1998 wrx?? ???

Also wrx/sti heads what's the diff? More aggressive cams etc

I'm assuming I can wack a set of sti heads on no problem??

The cam profiles on the gtb are around 270 ish duration pushes power band higher up the rev range, they were on the ones I bought, I got my heads for 200 bucks off trade me (my 2002), they also flow a hell of a lot better than sti heads too, larger porting from factory.

sti cam profile were 256 duration IN and EX and 9.2mm of lift on my v6 sti ra heads. Don't know what wrx are but 256 is pretty mild. You will need to get some welding done on the heads too if they were from a twin turbo car and going onto a single turbo.

Yeah il post up for a cash job otherwise il get tony at rdl to do it.

The welding is that for all twin turbo heads going onto a single turbo motor?

So what model year heads should i buy?

Il go down the legacy head route i think ;D

yes I believe so. I was told to get the newer type heads as they are ported more and i have a v8 engine so not sure what one you should get sorry for a v4.

yup there is. its a phase 1 motor, car is a v4. so it needs BG heads.

for reference V4 did have the facelight interior, but kept the P1 block like 1-3.

How you tell - look at the coil on the top of the manifold, on v3-4 its centered, or 5-6 its offset over to the right hand side as you look in the engine bay. also the TMIC and BOV hose connector gives it away.

Sweet! Now wats the deal with the welding? Why is that needed ???

dunno - ive never down a TT to ST conversion

What head gasket would u reccommend?

There are links on CS to check what CR your motor / ecu expects. Note that down.

Then when your mechanic or whoever is assembling the new heads on your motor - they need to measure the head CC and compression height to work out the right HG. this is the more $$ proper way to do it. We'll assume your motor has been decked at some point so small things change. maybe it will need re decking and so small HG changes MAY be needed.

the rangi cheap way is just chuck the head on with assumed measurements and you may or may not be right..."she'll be right".

I welded but i guess you can use bolts, its to do with extra oil and coolent lines.

if thats the case. Antz - the passenger head on the TT motors have oil and water feed / returns for the primary turbo on the TT set up. These are obviously not required any more so you need to close these off.

You use the feeds as per norm on the drivers side for your (td04? id assume)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
