Emission Standards

Hi all, am looking at a car to import from Japan a Subaru Impreza Coupe WRX Type R Sti Version V 1998 GC8 EJ20,what I need to know is the emission standards regarding this age of vehicle and if it possible to bring it in to drive on the road,if not then what are my options other than for road use?

It does not seem that easy to find the relevant info on the net?

Any help will be welcomed.

you would have to apply for a special exemption certificate but these are quite tough to get unless you can show the vehicle is rare/unique I believe. Also consider that it will be cheaper to simply buy one here in NZ than import one once the costs are considered.

emissions are not an issue IF you can get the special cert but you may still need to keep the cat in place when going for wofs depending on who you take it too.

No i dont think you will be bale to import it, emissions is only one of the rules it will fail on, the other would be frontal impact, and not sure there is a "cheap" way around that

As lunchie said you will need to import it as a "special interest vehicle". Must meet 3/4 of the following:

The vehicle (or its make, model and submodel) is identified as being a collector\'s item in one of the following magazines or their respective websites – Australian classic car, Car and driver (US), Automobile (US), Motor (Australia), Motor trend (US), New Zealand autocar, New Zealand classic car, Road and track (US), Top gear (UK), Top gear NZ, Unique cars (Australia) or Wheels (Australia).

The vehicle\'s make and model has been (or was) manufactured in annual volumes of 20,000 units or less.

The vehicle is, and was manufactured as, a two-door coupe or a convertible.

The vehicle is, and was manufactured as, a high-performance vehicle.

This would make it exempt from emissions and impact standards. Just search for special interest vehicle on nzta\'s website

I think it\'ll easily pass 3 of them - I dare say they made less than 20000 Type R\'s a year, it\'s a two-door coupe and it\'s a high-performance vehicle. Easy peasy
