ej20h cambelt questions

doing the cam belt very soon and as I work at super cheap auto parts aren\'t a problem, there is a a few different options for the idlers and tensioners and water pump, my motor is the ej20h out of a 1997 gt-b so with out me pulling the covers off and all that bother does any one know from past experience what I need? theoretically all ej20h engines should be the same.

from memory the cambelt kit is

cambelt

hydraulic tensioner

water pump

water pump gasket

thermostat and gasket

toothed idler

smooth idler x 2

crank seal

knowing my luck it probably not what you meant

yeah well at work it has a toothed idler and smooth idler options and 3 pipe water pump and all that carry on

meh I get pretty good discounts so not really fussed on genuine kits tbh, if the kit last 100,000 ks that\'s good if it doesn\'t and breaks they by me a new motor

well i\'m new there so I don\'t really know how to look up all the parts yet so it was probably my fault and just didn\'t understand the system nah they are fine man heaps of knowledge there.

either a 2 or 3 pipe W/pump depending on whats fitted

Crank seal , oil pump o\'ring (cause the screws on the back of the pump come loose- apparently)

2 smooth idlers (large)

1 toothed idler

tensioner - prob earlier type

cambelt

4 x camseals

w/pump gasket

I would buy genuine, your supercheap deal wont look so cheap if something breaks/snaps.(If your supercheap kit comes with a bosch belt, dont touch it)

if it fails they buy me a new engine so I\'m happy either way honestly I have no I intention to buy a genuine kit

They will NOT buy you a new engine,what they WILL do is send ALL the components away and then have them checked by a "professional" which they will come to the conclusion that YOU installed this or that incorrectly and your warranty is invalid.

This has happened to me even though I can guarantee that I installed everything correctly ( i have been a mechanic for 25 years) and have done well in excess of 50 cambelts and only ever had one fail by using NON genuine components.

I always USE genuine components whether it is a SUBARU, TOYOTA or what ever

BUT it is upto you if you are so sure that the components will last and that the warranty is solid go for it BUT you have been warned.

well I was actually talking to my boss a about it and he said they would give me a new engine, you probably know what\'s going on tho

They have policy\'s worded in such way that if one minuscule thing is different they can walk away from it, but as said above, your car, been warned and doesn\'t cost too much for you to fork out when they say no, and u need a rebuild

Yep, and pigs can fly.This is how insurance companys work, they make it sound so easy if anything goes wrong, but once it does its like like trying to break through a concrete wall 2m thick with a paperclip.

and are you a MTA certified machanic? if not no warranty!

sorry for the thread hijack but -

im not able to do the cambelt myself so got some quotes:

otago wreckers (not mta certified) said 700 cash job - cambelt, waterpump, [good secondhand] tensioner, idlers, and all seals

centre city auto (mta certified and had them do things to my car before) were the next cheapest at 890 incl gst. - cambelt, waterpump, tensioner, idlers, and all seals

is it worth the extra money going with centre city?

second hand tesioner, FAIL , you\'d be better off not doing the job at all

890 is CHEAP ! for a full belt job

yeah i was a bit skeptical about the second hand part, don\'t know what else they might use that is second hand.

full belt and w/pump kit is $495+ genuine (trade)

$40 for coolant

so the best part of 650 inc cost for parts

which means the 890 fitted is def cheap

its just a few hours lab and a lil mark up on the parts
