Refrigeration is one industry that should have been regulated years ago. There is too many guys out there playing with things they have no idea about.

Do you run your a/c like weekly? If not the is a real possibiliy that the compressor shaft seal has dryed out and that will be where your leak is. A shop should be able to spot it as soon as they throw the gauges on..

If the system is just low in refrigerant the should reclaim what is left vacuum the system and dump a full weighted charge of new refrigerant in. And do a leak check of the system to make sure it is gas tight.

If the gas completly gone ie at atmopheric pressure. They will need to put a trace amount of refrigerant to leak check and boost the to operating pressure with nitrogen. Perform a leak check to look for a major leak and once found repair. Fit a new reciever dryer Then evacuate(vacuum pump) the system and dump a new weighed charge of refrigerant into the system.

na bro. like i said, i only noticed this yesterday when i thought i would try the ac for once. i only had the car for like 2 months maybe. i rang unicool today, they said they can check it out for me. then if it needs regassing, it would be $130.

even running it all the time is not a guarantee that it will work for ever and a day, over time the aircon just runs out of gas

My 91 landcruiser at the end of last summer seized the compressor, The air con unit was never switched off and was used daily both winter and summer.

Mind you this is in a vehicle that is 20 years old and has done in excess of 420,000 km

another thing i forgot to mention. just to let u know how unloved the car\'s fan is. when i first turned the fan on in the car, it was blowing leaves and dust through the vents.. is there anyway i can maybe clean out the system? or do i just have to leave it blowing until it all comes out?

Honestly mate unless you go to the point of removing pretty much every box and duct under the dash. Best idea is just to wack the fan on full and feet until most of it comes out.

ok first all of does the engine increase revs when you press the a/c button??? or if u have it running with a/c on and fans blowing you should see the compressor pulley spinning, if not the clutch isnt engaging and ur air con system is not working either a fuse, compressor not plugged in, or a crook compressor, if it is spinning and picking up revs when on, ur a/c system is working but you will need a regass, which just invloves evacuating the system and recharging to the required quantity. and just a caution if compressor is not operating, its possilbe its fucked it self and put metal shaving through out your whole a/c system so it will all have to be removed and flushed with white spirits, and replace tx valve ect, so dont chuck on a new compressor if the old one doesnt go, cause the shavings will only fuck the new one.

You cannot diagnose low refrigerant lvel by seeing if the compressor speeds up when it is running..

Gauges and reciever/dryer sightglass is the method that should be employed...

thanks for the feedback guys. i went to armstrong today and got a quote from them for $90 to get it re gassed. a lot better priced then those other air con shops. might as well get it done by the subaru specialist since they are cheaper and will probably do a better job.

i wasnt meaning to test quantity of refridgerant by seeing if revs increase, i meant to check if the a/c system is functioning at all if compressor is operating. And yes you are correct about sight glass.

no the rev does not increase. i know what u r talking about. my b4 use to increase in revs when i have ac on. but the impreza dont do that

all cars increase in revs when clutch in compressor kicks in, its putting more load on the engine, thats why a/c takes up more fuel cause ur reving higher,
