Power Steering Pressure?

Recommended Posts

Hey thinking of changing my power steering lines round..

Just wondering if anyone knows the approx pressure that the fluid is running through these lines? don't want to have a hose clamp fitting blow off and make a mess!

Thanks

I personally wouldnt trust my steering and pump to it. Surely hydraulic hose cant be that expensive.

on the pressure side i would only use hydralic hose and fittings

on return side u could use the fuel hose

Exactly.

That is how I have done mine. Dont want to take any chances with power steering fluid - it catches fire quite well being so close to the turbo...

I've had that happen twice now! Cracked a factory swage once and the pump kinda ate itself the other time and haemorrhaged everywhere. The extinguisher makes more of a mess than the fire usually unless it gets near any wiring.

woah. thanks for the help, definitely learned something! not going to take any chances

I will use the factory steel line from the pump to the rack, and use Push Lock line from the rack to the reservoir (return)

Doing it that way, you can even add in a small length of steel line in front of the radiator (or a small heat exchanger) to try to take some heat out of the fluid too :)

even the original figure spouted by me via google search seems excessively high - was I right?

and if one was to assume it is I would also assume like Swinny above that's a "peak" pressure quoted? a\

and that normal pressures could/would be significantly lower than that? say around the 800+- mark?

Ok so now my other problem..

how do i remove the 2 fittings that go into the steering rack?

My engine and gearbox are in, and i have tuned length extractors so i can't remove the up-pipe. which means they are in an EXTREMELY hard place to get at!

Anyone have any suggestions? using a crowfoot wrench? removing the steering rack with lines attached then doing it?

Thanks

Last time I did it I used one of those bars that goes across the engine bay and you strop the engine to it. Then dropped the subframe down. Those fittings were very easy to get to then :)

Jacking the engine up could have the same effect but will be hard to get the same amount of clearance.

I borrowed one from my mates workshop. Not sure if its the kind of thing you can generally hire though??

Workshop's (or people) that do lots of fwd stuff or Mitsi's should have them as they are good for stopping the engine falling over when you take the gearbox off.

Dropping the subframe isnt that hard really, 4 bolts and the steering rack universal joint.

I have this exact PITA job to do tonight as i think ive got a leak where the rack connects to the lines. Im going to try unbolting the steering rack from the subframe first then pulling everything down. Might get lucky and get access to the connections that way...

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok so i decided to re-do my power steering lines, here is what i did.. (Idea courtesy of Tony (Ronin)

Items:

1m 8000psi Teflon Inner Braided Hose

1m 300psi Push Lock Hose

2x -6AN teflon braided fittings

1x -6AN push lock fitting

2x -6AN male steel weld on fittings

Got the steel weld on fitting welded to my hard lines like so..

The advantages of this set up are:

1. Better looking engine bay

2. Easy removal

3. Stronger and flame proof

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
