Clutch recommendations

Hi guys,

My clutch has seen it\'s days so I\'m looking for a replacement.

I\'ve got a Subaru Legacy GT 1994 Station Wagon.

My mechanic recommended Exedy and was just wondering what the other Subaru fans thought.

I was going to go heavy duty while I am at it but the price seems to jump quite a lot and not sure if it is worth it considering how high the Ks are on my baby.

So I guess I am looking for the best quality cheap clutch.

Autoclutch gave me the following prices:

Standard Exedy clutch

$304.60 + gst

Heavy duty Exedy clutch (with grinding flywheel and a (something) bearing?)

$595.50 + gst

My knowledge is obviously very limited in this area of cars so any advise would be much appreciated.

Your mechanic is on the money... OEM Exedy... he will know what to do with the flywheel and bearings etc.

Heavy duty will be money down the drain.

Genuine sti+aftermarket release bearing or that exedy option is very good price. I ran an oem replacement exedy in foz and couldnt fault it for a daily. It never saw any anger tho.

Many of us thrash the pants off OEM replacement clutches (ie; non-HD) and get good wear out of them.

Elan Should have just asked me haha! I have a genuine sti clutch that\'s had the pressure plate up rated by Auto Clutch and a Kevlar clutch plate fitted instead of an Organic.. All this would be good if BNT actually machined the fly wheel properly cause it shudders like a bitch :-\ I\'ll bring the b4 round and show you haha.

this will be more likely the kevlar causing the shudder than anything else

A little bit of shudder is expected on a higher performance clutch but not to the extent that I am experiencing, It actually smokes reversing up a steep drive way, I\'m pretty sure the surface isn\'t fully smooth on the fly wheel tbh.

Also it has a vibration when when accelerating and some times you can feel the car shake on idle so this to me points to the fly wheel being out of balance / incorrect machining

wheel out of balance would have to be miles out to cause an issue at idle

and would get worse with more rpm

other cuase could be oil on clutch plate , incorrent fitment ( poor alignment and hanging box off the clutch when installed ) or

broken engine , trans or pitching stop mounts

Well the way I see it is you bolt the clutch to the fly wheel and use an alignment tool there is next to no way of doing it wrong, Now when it comes time to fitting the box wouldn\'t the dowels or what ever they are sticking out of the motor support the weight of the box?? I had a mech do this so i\'m just trying to find out what is up exactly

Or maybe the problem is that the pressure plate was uprated by autoclutch. I heard some bad rumours about them today and the guy also refused to give the clutch to my mechanic for the price he gave me.

...and ask for trade. Should be $360inc for both plates and then get the release and spigot bearing from extreme or whatever its called where you live.

If I ask for trade does that mean it is the price my mechanic can get it for? Do they have to be on the account for this?

My mechanics are Nissan freaks not Subaru

Sub genuine has a max discount of 20% iirc most people are 10%. I used to get 25 or 30% which I think was staff and they were pretty much passing on at cost. Doesnt matter who you are trade is trade with gen unless you buy a shiteload of one item or its an expensive item say through toyota where you can get a special price roughly 1/3 of the original sell price.
