Problem with Subaru B4 Legacy

Hey guys my name is Ash, I'm new to the forums.

I'm having an unexpected problem with my B4. I suspect it is a sensor that's malfunctioning. The car is in very good condition for it's age and has been regularly serviced and has no other problems until now.

Recently the dash lights randomly cut out, and the needles to display speed and rpm turn red and bounce up and down. When this happens I cannot see the speedo or temperature and gas gauges it goes black. I have no idea what causes it. It has happened randomly whilst I am driving, and occasionally happens when I start the car. Sometimes it returns to the normal display after a short time, but it has done this for long periods of time while driving.

The overall performance of the car doesn't seem to be effected, the only problem is I cant see what speed I'm doing when it occurs.

Has anyone else had this issue before?

Off-topic, is your number plate ASH B4?

Sounds like you could have a loose wire or plug in the back of your gauge cluster you will need to pull it out to check them

Hey Ash, mine does the exact same thing and has for about a year I've just been too lazy to fix it.

I've pulled my dash out a couple of times and sprayed contact cleaner on the plugs which helped for awhile but it came back after a few weeks.

Normally giving mine a "love tap" will fix it but sometimes I have to wait for it to come right on its own.

I've been told these guys are able to recondition / service the clusters to fix a fuel gauge issue that happens on these too. http://www.eparrott.co.nz

I haven't taken mine in to them yet as its an obvious pain not being able to use the car while its being done but if I manage to fix it I'll let you know.
