Replacement Turbo for Automatic 2003 2L Legacy GT

Hey,

So my turbo is pretty dead and I've just pulled it out has a lot of play. What kind of turbos can I replace the current one with and if so where would i get it from? It current has a VF38 (OEM) in it.

Facelift turbo, or one from a manual (td04 twin scroll)

The auto pfl turbos are known to crap themselves

Dumb question time, but why are there different turbos for manual and auto? and will running a manual turbo on an auto cause any issues?

Autos get a slightly smaller one, they give away some top end to get better response to suit the way a slushbox drives compared to manuel

In saying that though, the facelift models seem to have the same turbo regardless. 2006 got vf45 and 07 vf46, haven't heard about 08 onwards for comparison. Try get hold of a vf45 or 46.

Didn't invisible just recently swap out a vf38 for a vf45

Yep I sure did, I went from VF38 to VF45 (from a facelift) and it sure did make things a whole lot more fun!

And yes facelift onwards use the same turbo for both auto and manual

So would I be correct in saying that I should be on the look out for a VF45/46 turbo? Or are there other alternatives? Don't know how comfortable I feel with going with a VF38 again if they really aren't good turbos.

Go for vf45/46 for a solid reliable turbo. Only real alternative is from kinugawa who make the TD04HLA 19T for performance comparable to the stock turbo's or the slightly higher rated TD04HL 20T, supposedly around 10% higher flow so should give it a bit more guts at the top end which these cars lack so greatly. 2nd hand vf45/46 is obviously the best choice if money's tight though
