Who has changed their valve seals?

Okay, so I have a massive oil consumption problem. I suspected the oil control rings because the previous owner swears that the heads were just reconditioned.

Only piston 3 is oily... but the piston is fine as are the rings. So back to the heads... has anyone changed their own valve seals? What valve spring compressor

did you use? Is it obvious from looking at the vales and/or seals when they are bad? I would hate to put the motor back together to find the valve seals were not

the problem. btw the bottom of the values are very carbonised, more than I would expect from about 2000 kms, but maybe not.

Who deemed the rings fine ? Was it run in very well?

Valve stems are pretty easy to diognose . Hard cracked ****ty looking ones are fkd . It they are nice n rubbery they are fine .

Yet to find a spring compressor worth using on a jap motor . Usually just cut up a piece of tube and then hook a loop of wire around sonethin and pull down with a lever etc

An engine builder looked at them and said that were slightly worn but not bad enough to cause massive oil consumption.

I assume it was run in by the person who spent a lot of money building it, so I'd say it was most likely run in properly.

Snapon sell them but must buy them off a third party. Blue point i think it is.

I used a G-clamp and an oxygen sensor socket to pull apart my flatmate's Vtec head. Oh and a body washer with the centre hole bored slightly larger than the keeper diameter.

Worked amazingly well. Oh and one of those retractable magnets to grab the keepers.

Tool i posted you just push down and it has a magnet for the keepers. Simple push on pull off style.

yeah I watched a video demo... I think I'd prefer a clamp style device though... getting one from BNT.

I put the vales and associated parts back together on my heads, it was easy enough when using the correct tool. I did use a professional clamp style tool from my mates garage. The tappets were tricky and I was paranoid as hell I messed it up but it's been all good.

If your taking the valves out you may as well grind them back with the paste and reseat them in your heads, it's boring but oddly satisfying, all I used is a suction cup thing and just applied paste and ground them in situ.

The one i posted is hell simple single handed even. I had a clamp one as well horrible thing to use and time consuming.

Be very careful installing new seals.

A: different type for inlet & exhaust

B: make sure they slide on evenly,if they go on unevenly it can wreck the inside of them & deform the steel outer making them useless

Thanks. I didn't know they were different until I ordered them... the ones on there are all the same.

Pretty expensive little buggers... $12 + gst each for the exhaust, $7 + gst each for the intake.

I modded my alcheapo clamp to use on subaru heads about 7years ago works mint, still going strong just used it on a volvo head the other day
