auto trans issues

Gidday guys,

My mate is having probs in his early 90's legacy, it is not shifting gears well in auto mode, is fine 1st & 2nd but needs to be backed off to get into 3rd(and driven like a manual), he had this problem diagnosed as a sensor that aparanetly lives in the gaurd, altho it could also be the trans computer, which is a 2AA.....any ideas what this sensor could be? or where exactly i could find it,

The trans ecu stores trouble codes, check them out and see what they are.

Also have a look and a smell of the transmission fluid, compare it to some new stuff. If it's dirty, smelly... the transmission is toast.

Sounds like a toasted trans to me (I did pop 2 before I went manual...).

its the 2nd gearbox that has gone in...do they have plugs or anything, and where could i find it, cheers

You get the trouble codes by moving the transmission shift in a certain sequence.

Oh yeah, there is no sensor in the guard.

If you have had two recond trans then there must be something else wrong with the car causing it, those things should be good for a quarter million Kms.

If you are throwing in second hand ones... Don't! They only have about eight hundred dollars worth of wearing parts, seals/gaskets in them. Find someone that can overhaul one for you.

maybe they are thinking of speed sensor's? Two i think !!one is part of the cluster and is driven by the drive adapter and than the speedo cable up to the speedo assembly or somthing like that and the other is in the tail shaft of the transmission, but you should of got chk lght i think

dying clutch pack.. ???

my gf has a little mazda with similar faults.. told by a mech that its the box dying... something about having to back right off putting less torque through the box allowing the dying clutch pack to pick up the next gear.

Hers wont even pick up 4th when its stone cold.. hoooons down the motorway in 3rd - a rather funny experience..

this sounds similer to what happend to my auto, clutch pack ended up giving up. my trans died all together in the end.

*UPDATE*

ok so the wof/reg just run out, and too save tickets my mate got a cheap car (BD5) and i just sussed a deal to get this cheap. am getting it tomorrow, will try and extract codes or get a better desc of whats going on, otherwise i will covert to manual altho id lie an auto so the mrs can drive it,

ok this is a BF5 model and its doing the following:

almost undrivable in auto mode, but in manual mode you can drive it in 1 and 2 but when you put in 3 it stays in 2 and when you go D it just feels like a slipping clutch.

Have also noticed that the speedo doesnt go, could this be affecting it? do these have a speed sensor unit as it has not thrown any check lights as of yet.

Is this trans totally buggered? (havent checked auto codes yet)

it sounds buggerd hahaha, not sure whats wrong with it, the feels like a slipping clutch is the feeling i got before mine died, then all of a sudden going up a slight hill, it just started free reving, no gears worked, was pooed.

as to your totally buggerd question. . . some one else who actuaaly knows what this problem is will have to answer

Hmm how much do you give your trans's

I give mine a fairly good working sometimes and I'm scared its gonna break one day.

Done 210k km far as I know its original trans.

Est life of these anyone ?

Well we fixed the prob over the weekedn anyways...manual conversion!

Pity you're not in AKL of I'd have GIVEN you my old auto + a beer for getting it off my lawn! AFAIK it has all gears but absolutely nuked-beyond-all-buggery diffs.

My mates mate reckons he has everything for a manual coversion for $400 IIRC, altho my whole conversion only owes me $250 and all i have to do is get gearbox fliud and clutch fluid.

Only took me a day to swap everything over, and that was on the ground using jacks etc

yeah its gota wait till i am working full time, and cambelt service has been done, so might have to ask around feb/march

yeah, id start looking for bits now - just what you can aford, and see how much you can collect on the cheap.
