steering wheel removal

seeing as my car is over 10 years old i've been told i can remove the airbag and put i smaller steering wheel on with out any issues with the wof man.

can someone confirm this for me or point me in the right direction eg needing a cert?

if its ok whats involved in removing the airbag and is it worth doing as my steering wheel having done 224,000kms is getting a little worn and after long drives my hands are left black for days afterwards.

Modification

8. A motor vehicle that has had an airbag removed or

made inoperable must either:

a) have all OE signs lights, or other devices that

indicated the vehicle was ftted with an airbag

removed, or

b) if the signs, lights, or other devices cannot be

readily removed, have a label that indicates an

airbag has been removed permanently attached

in a prominent location where it is clearly visible

to any occupant of the seating position that was

previously protected by the airbag.

9. A modifcation that afects an airbag system must be

inspected and certifed by an LVV specialist certifer,

unless the vehicle is:

a) excluded from the requirement

for LVV specialist certifcation

(Table 7-6-1), and

b) has been inspected in accordance with the

requirements in this manual, including those for

equipment, condition and performance.

Make really sure, before removing it.

It'll have to be certified if ya do.

thanks guys i knew it wouldn't just be a straight forward remove/replace with boss kit and smaller wheel.

Are there any how too on how to replace airbag steering wheels as i really want to change mine even if its just with another factory one as i hate grubby hands after driving.

added security to if you can install detachable steering wheel.

do i have to get a cert for changing over to a newer one of the same version? as this is still about $600 to get done.

de-teachable was what i was looking at but there not the cheapest but you get what you pay for.

as long as you can legally remove your airbag then you can put whatever steering wheel on you want, you wont need a cert but you have to get a cert for other things so you would get it certed anyway, however i wouldnt go detachable, waste of time and money.

man situation im in my stock steering wheel is falling to peices!!

tho i just want to put another stock airbag wheel in...

is it just a simple swap?

Yup, pretty easy. You need a security torx bit to get the airbag off though. Disconnect the battery before doing anything though.
