Got my V4 STI coupe (type R) for $7200, but its a little rough here and there. Came with some fruit though (exhaust, external, front mount, ECU). Seems to be a bit of a jump in price to V5's and up though. Sedans are definately cheaper and wagons cheaper again. STIs of course command more than WRXes.

What to look for... the usual things really.

-Rust (boot, chassis rails, sills, firewall, A/C pillars, around windscreens, etc)

-Leaks from rocker cover gaskets are common (crawl under the car and look at the ends of the engine next to chassis rails) - this can be expensive-ish to fix

-Any signs of overheating etc (if possible look at the car when its cold and check the header tank is full), they can crack the radiator endtanks sometimes, and blown headgaskets will usually end the motor

-Knocks from suspension indicating worn shocks (other than shocks subys seem pretty good for suspension reliability)

-Shuddering under braking (warped rotors, will cost a couple hundred at most)

-Check the DCCD works if it has it, turn it all the way down, do a U turn, it should be silent. Then turn it up to locked and do another U turn, it should clunk around a bit.

-Avoid anyone selling their car as a "singapore spec sti" ;D (sorry bit of a forum joke)

If it has a front mount, check if they've cut chassis to fit it.

There is also a good thread http://www.clubsub.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic,5731.15.html here, post number 3 will give you an idea on different facelifting of the GC8's.

Good luck and have fun.

Also - when you view a car, jot down the VIN from the firewall, so you can check it matches the plate! Plus you can call your local friendly Subaru dealer and check what sort of spec it really is, as they can tell you if it's actually an STI or not.

FIRST thing you do when checking out a car is take a good long look at the owner!

If the cap is on an angle, walk away... :D

If he/she uses the words Boost, or Boosting as an adjective, walk away...

Next, look at the car:

If it has any of the plates on an angle, you guessed it, walk away...

If it has more than 3 parts/brands stickers on it, then walk away...

...and, most importantly, if it is described as a special edition coming from Singapore, laugh in his/her face, and then walk away...

;D

One way to score the car you are after is to find one that some redneck has blown up, some thing really serious like a BEB where-by they cant afford to fix it themself. As long as the body and interior is mint or has the potential to be.

If you are mechanically minded and/or with the extra cash you saved from buying one that is blown up, you can pull the motor and get it reconed or buy a replacement engine with bonified KMs, then do the clutch, W/pump, oil pump service, cambelt, tensioner, idlers, and get the radiator flushed etc etc.

You can inspect, clean and service the lot!

That way you know what you have right from the get go, otherwise there is always that shadow of doubt and/or chance that your poor old EJ20 has been totally raped, modified by a complete muppet and never been serviced, even if the dude that sold you the car looks like he's telling the truth that its "never been thrashed".

Plus all that helps with re-sale

Thats my fiddy

Sort of what I've got on my hands as above. A $350 BC5 assumed to not work. Stuck in drive and refusing to run. With a car in this state, assume it will need an entire powertrain swap and go from there...with a mint body you can't go wrong :)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
