V4 STI RA - Plenty of questions

Hi guys

Had this car for a month or so now so thought I should post something up!

P1030997.jpg

I have a large number of questions that I thought I might post on here:

Car is 1998 V4 STi RA, have receipts for new engine, which is a 2.2L fully forged thing etc

Question 1: What oil should I be running? Doing a change on sunday so thought I might scope out what opinions you guys have on different brands, types etc (had a look through the oil thread but didn't get much help) Also with this type of engine should I be running anything specific? anything to avoid?

Question 2: The car desperately needs re-tuning its currently running really rich and idling quite high, running a Microtech ecu and hoping I can get it on the dyno within the next month

Anyway wanting to put a bigger turbo on it as its just got the standard vf24 running 14.5Psi at the moment.

What are my options with this in regards to this?

Question 3: Comment from the previous owner was that the injectors were running at near full capacity, these are just the standard factory ones at the moment but what are my options to upgrade these? Are there any bigger/higher capacity suitable injectors on the earlyer models that would work? Or would I have to go aftermarket?

Is there anything else that I need to upgrade or be aware of before I put it on the dyno?

I am sure I have plenty of other questions but Ill post them up in due course

Thanks Andrew

sounds like a bitsa to me man.. a tdo4 isnt a standard v4 sti ra turbo.. i think it woukd be more a vf23/24 or 28 on that.

v5 injectors that are de capped would be a good upgrade for injectors, but what about when you re tune it? the factory injectors may not be working so hard when not overfueling..

Haha yeah, its got a vf24 not sure where the td04 came from ;D

Oh yup, yeah thats a good point, ideally I want to run relatively low boost. According to the dyno print out that came with the car its making 208kw's at the wheels on 14.5psi boost at the moment but not really to sure about that. Doesn't seem as fast as I thought it would be but that could be because the turbo spools up ridiculously early

A full synthetic oil would be a good idea

Turbo - how much more power do you want - how much lag do you want ?

Version 5 injectors will not fit directly u will have to mod the fuel rails

Can you shed some light on how the 2.2 was built?

Is it using a open deck 2.2?

Not 100% sure as I have to re-read receipts but does a closed deck short block sound right?

Originally was planning on buying a Sti and rebuilding it but then found this for the same sort of money so thought why not, if it means I don't have to spend my rebuild money for another 40,000ks then all good.

Yup was on trademe. Believe the car has some sort of history with the club. Think it was at a Christchurch track day according to the owner

Good car mate, was wondering if you did purchase that one as I haven't seen it around for a lil while. Yup was at the august playday trackday, wasn't thrashed too much as he had pad issues... was at that point still on stock pads

if u not wanting too much more power than leave the injectors alone.

they should be yellow top 440cc injectors and will last u easily above the performance of the turbo

they should see 215-220kw@w from what other cars with them have gotten

but u might want to swap tubo to get there..

if u leave the vf24 there and the injectors - just put on a decent walbro255lph fuel pump and retune

it should do 208 as per figure easily and be very driveable due to little lag

  • 2 weeks later...

Pretty beast...the wheels, I approve! ;D

The 2.2 build; sounds tasty. And relevant. Closed deck 2.2 is a rare item indeed, and if you managed to score one... MINT!! AFAIK 22Bs and Legacy SS were the only culprits, yes?

I presume it has been bored out to 2.2 not an original 2.2L block as that would make more sense.

Thinking about sending it up to Speed Source to get it re-tune anyone dealt with these guys?

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
