trans cooler on a 6MT

Recommended Posts

There is a metal tubular line which links the front and middle casings on the gearbox. On the cooler equipped ones there will be break in this line which has hoses on it that lead to the radiator bottom tank where the trans fluid is cooled (same as how it is done on auto trans in some cars) rather than a seperate external cooler. This is on the Spec C's I have seen - not sure if any of the models actually had external coolers as such? Maybe someone else can chime in about that....

On the non cooler equipped cars the line has no breaks and just goes from front to the middle. To fit a cooler you need to remove the line, cut it and braze some fittings on each end and then run the lines to an external cooler. Easy.

Its probably a good idea to use an auto radiator and utilise the "cooler" part of that as it will keep the gearbox fluid at a consistant temp rather than possibly cooling it down too much. Same idea as using a thermostat for an external engine oil cooler.

ok i found a picture of a box -

point to me where "a line" runs to and from on the gearbox side... ignoring what the lines connect to in terms of coolers.

right perfect thats what i want to konw.. it is that bango and metal pipe on the braket between front and middle sectoins... just behind the axle stub?

Should be. I'd braize a weld nipple onto the banjo piece, after cutting the pipe off, and then use AN fittings from there.

Or if using a factory auto radiator, I'd just cut the pipe and put hose straight onto it (we've got the tool that makes the wee raised "bump" (technical terms elude me right now) on the end so they don't come off though).

why weld a fitting onto the pipe from banjo? you could just buy a banjo part, thats ready for An fittings. thats all i did for my turbos.

unless they dont go big enough lol

it's just the spec c boxes that have a cooler, i believe they also have an internal pump???

All the 6MTs have an internal pump I'm sure. I know mine does as when it got rebuilt last time Anton said the pump was still in good condition and had no issues...

Local speedway shops didn't have the correct thread when I was doing a similar job and was going to take me about 4 fittings to get it to do the same thing. Only reason I chose to do it that way.

  • 4 weeks later...

right to revive this thread -

I need the part circled:

1) to hold the gear linkage

2) a line to link the rear to middle sections in lieu of a trans cooler line

6speed.jpg

Also -

a) what does the tube on the top of the box do near the bell housing?

b) i cant seem to find where the speedo cable input is.

c) what goes in the bolt hole above the main selector shaft? (looks like a neutral indicator)..

edit - ok so c is that sensor - i dont have one - what is it? and where will i find one?

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
